Feeling a bit shellshocked after traumatic week, anyone with experience of Viral Chest Infections?

Hi there, DD, 16 months had what I thought was a cold over last weekend. TUesday morning she was panting like a dog and had a temp of 39 which was not coming down with Calpol, we took her to docs who sent us straight to hospital and we were kept in overnight. She was on oxygen and nebulisers for 24 hours, we are home now and she just has a cold and although breathing quickly not struggling for breath. They thought it was pneumonia or bronchilitis but in the end after chest xrays and blood tests they put it down to a "viral" infection. I just feel a bit shell shocked, she was so poorly when in hospital and I can't get over how quickly she deteriorated, I just wondered how "normal" this was and if anyone has experience of it and if it means she will be prone to them in the future, is there anything I can do to prevent them, what to look for in the future?? TIA xx

Also, they didn't prescribe any medication, antibiotics or anything why would that be?

No need for antibiotics as it was viral.

It is fairly common, but very scary!

There is nothing in particular you need to do in the future apart form what you are already doing. If it was viral and wasn't bronchiolitis, then she may well never have anything like that aggain. When kids are prone to bronchiolitis, it can return a few times during their infancy.

Glad she's on the mend!

I've literally just put down the phone to one of my best friends whose 15 month old had exactly the same thing and was in hospital for 24 hours this week on oxygen and nebulisers. It must be doing the rounds.

Anyway, he is still a bit wheezy but other than that mostly unaffected 1 day on from it.

HTH xx

My dd had something similar in December, it really came and got her and she's 7 now. I treated it with Calpol and Brufen (it had been round the class so was sure it was viral) but was surprised how ill she was and how lethargic for a week afterwards. Fully recovered now though .

BTW it is not something she has been prone to.

thanks you very much for the messages, DD is the same Zakuro... I can't believe how she has bounced back in 24 hours - think I could do with a hospital bed now though! And glad to here she won't necessarily be prone to themx

my dd [4] was taken to hospital this morning with the same thing.this is the 5th time shes been in hospital with it only had to stay in once, she was sent home after a couple of hours today.dd has inhalers which shes had since she was 2.was told it's something she should grow out of.very scary though as it's happened so many times we know what to look out for and try to catch it soon as.
