does she clean teeth willingly?

when i took dd1 at around that age, I took her toothbrush with us, and cleaned her teeth (not using toothpaste). dentist was very obliging and crawled around looking at different angles to get aloook at dd1's teeth.

dd1 has ASD, so wouldn't have understood me anyway if I wanted her to open her mouth, so thoght that was the best way.

dd2 otoh, understands readily, but does not comply, so will be using same metod with her and crossing fingers lots.

Hold her nose.

TrinityRhino · 11/02/2009 13:53

unfortunately no, she only wants to do it herself
So that is a mini battle in itself and dont thin the dentist would get much of a look
Its going to have to be a headlock isn't it

if she wants to clean her own teeth, let ehr - she still has to open her mouth.

would she do it again and again? it took our dentist quite a while to see all of dd1's teeth, but he was happy to, and tbh they don't need more than a quick glance at that age (unless you are suspectign a problem?)

so we just kept brushing teeth until he'd seen what he wanted to see.

nt looking forward to taking dd2 though, as she is a contrary little madam

TrinityRhino · 11/02/2009 13:59

well, the reason I fought for an app. was because she has already had half of one of her top teeth crumble away (one next to the middle two)

and the same thing is starting with one of the middle top ones

You can make her cry. Bet the dentist will get a good look then.

Seriously, I booked many abortive routine checks for a dentist to look at my dd's teeth but it was only at the last one, when dd was 4+, that she actually opened her mouth. Now, she 'loves' her dentist, so she tells me.

Seona1973 · 11/02/2009 14:06

dd was also about 4 before she opened her mouth for the dentist and she had gone to several appointments with me before that. ds (2) opened his mouth at the last appointment but we had been coaching him beforehand i.e. getting him to roar like a tiger with his mouth wide open. Both my lo's have been registered from when they first got teeth and have been going along with me to my 6 monthly checks - they get a sticker afterwards too.

Still have probs with my 6yo SEN dd enthusiastically clamping shut on dentists mirror thing just as she does on toothbrush. he's very patient. Good luck

FriarKewcumber · 11/02/2009 14:09

sorry not helpful but I worked on DS for weeks with doctor and dentist play to let people look in his mouth and listen to his chest, etc.

claireybrations · 11/02/2009 14:10

waggle a boob at her?

TrinityRhino · 11/02/2009 14:11

thanks for the good luck
this dentist is NOT patient and already said no to her having an app. but I rang and hassled a bit as I think her teeth need looking at

this is going to be hell
I've already had to almost pin her down to get her to take her antibiotics for infected molloscum today

2 is plenty old enough, that is when I recommended first seing patients. Hang her upside down and tickle her . I used to find that quite effective to have a quick check. However if there is a problem then a fuller exam and whatever follow up may be necessary.

TrinityRhino · 11/02/2009 15:37

well thanks all
went very well all things considered

I think the dentist has had an empathy, patience and friendliness implant since the last time I saw her

she was patient and managed to look at her front teeth (the ones that are the problem at the mo) whilst I was tickling her and she was laughing

She has prescribed flouride drops and a check up in 6 months time

she sais it looks like that tooth that has crumbled hust didn't have enough calcium but it doesn'e look like they are all like that and the flouride drops should stop it detereorating (sp?) any further
