Reassurance needed on bruising to the eye area

3 months ago my 5 year old sustained an horiffic injury to his eye area at school. Black eye doesn't even begin to describe it -it swelled to 4 times its size and he was unable to open it for 10 days. It has gradually got better but the bruising is still there.

We have obviously been to the eye hospital and while there is no damage to his eye, I am concerened that 3 months later he still has what looks like a black eye. All the internet searches I have done say that bruising should subside after 6 weeks or so. I would love some reassurance that it will eventually go.

Oh, your poor Ds! I would go and get him checked again just in case they missed something due to "swolleness" of the eye the first time you went.

Def get it check IMO. Not worth speculating when it's the eye area. Am sure it'll be fine but you'll worry less if you kow you've had it checked!

Oh poor you and ds

get it checked again.. am sure it will be okay.. this area does seem to take an age to look normal afterwards.. DS's have both had whopping black eyes that took agaes to go back to normal.. ( sports grrrr).

Thanks v much for your reponses. We have had 2 appointments at Moorfields and have another in 10 days time. That is really though just to look at potential damage to the eye itself and they don't seem to be able to give any guidance on the bruising.

I am satisfied that his eye and sight are fine but it's the area around the eye that I'm concerned about. I guess perhaps I should see a GP who might have a better handle on that. I just don't understand the science of bruising.

To try and put your mind a little at ease. Ds2 had a horrific incident where he broke his nose and cracked his cheek bone right near the orbit bit of his eye. he bruising lasted ages.. and he had the follow ups 7-10 days later.. this was due to the amount of bruising.. they needed to recheck his face/ eyes when the bruising subsided a bit.. he was fine... but the bruising lasted months.

ds1 had a rugby accident where his head was hit and the bruising 'fell' down and settled in his eyeballs.. literally the white of his eyes were bruised.. he is also fine .. although you can still see the marks on the whites of his eyes where the bruising was to this day (2 years on).
