Tonsillitis again :(

Poor ds was up most of last night with temp of 41 calpol and nurofen didn't really help
Went to out of hours at about 11 who sent us to a&e who diagnosed tonsillitis.
He was monitored for a few hours to get temperature under control and we were let home this morning.
Poor ds this is the 5th time since september but his resp consultant doesn't really want to take them out.

How old is your DS?

We have had 2 winters of tonsilitis and ear infections that never seem to improve. At Christmas I posted on here and people were really helpful. I was advised to give probiotics to build up her immune system which I have and also I have added vitamins to her milk. I am amazed at the difference it has made, she has been fighting off a cold for 2 weeks but that is all it is, a cold. Before it would have been an ear infection or tonsils but this time she seems to have the resources to fight. I am over the moon with 6 weeks without antibiotics (touch wood!!)

Have you tried probiotics before?

My two step-dds had their tonsils out at 7 ish, I imagine DD will need hers removed as well. Why is the dr not wanting to remove them?

My dd has tonsilitis at the moment. Tis grim. She has 10 days worth of indutrial strength anti-b's. Does this resp consultant believe that his tonsils are 'protecting' his chest? There is a possibility that the tonsils catch the infection before it takes hold further down. dd was, like her brothers, referred to have hers removed as she suffered loads of infections before she was maybe 5. We didn't go ahead, mainly because she is at risk under GA but also for the reason that she was on balance 'safer' with tonsilitis than with a chest infection.

Hope he feels better very soon.

The consultant just said that he's at the age where they pick up tonsillitis (ds is 4) and he would rather take the wait and see approach. He thinks if he didn't have tonsillitis it would be a chest infection. He has got brittle asthma so really don't need chest infections thrown in
Ds is still really poorly but has managed some breakfast this morning.

Oh gosh no you can do without the chest infections. I read some of your threads before about his asthma but didn't realise he'd been dxd as brittle. That must be a worry. dd is looking better today although still not swallowing in comfort, she was worringly puffy yesterday.

Don't think they know themselves what to diagnose
He's got a 24hr impendance and ph monitoring and sleep study end of march and an mri soon.
They just keep throwing more and more medication at him.
Tonsillitis really knocks him down

They're thinking reflux then? On top of his asthma?

dd had an MRI last Autumn. No GA as she's 15 - she was in the machine for almost 2 hours. Did fab - I'd have been screaming to be let out way before!

ali and Saggars

I'm so sorry both your LOs have tonsilitis, its awful - I used to get it a lot as a child (and did grow out of it, completely).

dd2, she of the (ex) gigantic tonsils, thankfully never had it before having had them removed. Or I'd be worrying about chest infections too.

Really hope they are both better soon, and that probiotics and/or getting older and/or spring (when it comes) mean less bouts. 5 times since September sounds dreadful, Ali..did'nt you have it too, at least once?

alibobins · 10/02/2009 20:33

Well they want to start at the beginning and test for things again
Mri will be under GA
We go back to consultant in 7 weeks for bloods more x-rays and to see what else they want to test for

Ali

Are you taking immune-boosting stuff? Not that I know much about any of it. I took a French homeopathic thing called L-52 whilst waiting for dd's op, to try and avoid catching infectious lurgies - it did seem to help, but who knows.

Be nice to yourself whenever possible, please.

Elibean - I take it the op went well?

Alibobons, any good health shop should have powdered probiotics like acidophilus or similar, I think that one is quite broad range and you can get even better ones. You can take it as an adult as well as a child. It helps your gut keep the good bacteria thus helping to strengthen your immune system helping you to fight the bugs. Good luck, it is miserable.

Euw, poor you. Ears are the worst, can you see a doctor? My friend left an ear infect too long as she was worrying about her DD and it actually perforated, can you get checked out?

Report
Elibean · 11/02/2009 20:43

I'm glad ds is better, Ali, though v sorry about your ear - I haven't had an ear infection since being a kid, but I remember the pain

Agree with Blue, do get it checked if you can tomorrow.

Hello BBF! How did I manage to miss your post earlier? Sorry, would have said hello if I'd spotted it! Yes, thanks, it went well - though fairly horrible for a couple of weeks afterwards (and the night was loooong in HDU) and the results are, as you and everyone told me they would be, so very worthwhile. dd no longer has sleep aponoea, is eating like never before, full of life and energy, and just - well, a normal two year old. Its extraordinary. How are you, and LOs?

Sorry for the hijack, Ali...

Eli- So glad you got the results you wanted

alibobins, can you try to warm olive oil in the ear for some pain relief?

Elibean (sorry to hijack ali) - so pleased to hear good news, I'll bet you are thrilled to have your lovely little one back on form!

Speaking of HDU.... my 12 year old step-daughter has been in hospital for over a week having 2 spinal surgeries for severe scoliosis. The came out of surgery on Monday night and only left HDU this evening. The 2 long operations in 5 days had taken their toll and they think she may now have an infection, her temp and heart beat are both high and she feels dreadful and is in so much pain. She has a morphine pump which she uses but in the night if she sleeps for more than a couple of hours she wakes up with no pain relief so we are having to take turns sitting with her to keep the morphine going in. I have been there all day and am totally frazzled, not as frazzled as her poor Mum though plus DH is back there again tonight for the first half of the night shift. Meanwhile I have the other 2 girls to look after and I work.... just having a nice glass of wine... is that so wrong??

Elibean · 11/02/2009 22:34

BBF your poor dsd. I remembered she was having the scoliosis ops, but had no sense of time - that went fast! Sounds awful, is this level of pain expected? I will ask dh about his neice's surgery, if you like, I didn't know him then and have no idea what the initial recovery was like...only the longer term part. Take care of yourself, in all of that, you must be exhausted.

Ali, hope you hvae some strong painkillers to keep you going till you can get some ABs and/or perforated eardrum You poor sausage, what a winter you've had...hope the GP helps, if its still painful in the morning.

Report
BlueBumedFly · 11/02/2009 22:45

Thanks Elibean, I think the pain level is to be expected for the first week or two then it improves as the body heals, lets hope so as she is due to stand up tomorrow (!!!) and be out of hospital within a week and she will be off the morphine by then!
