Very active DS(3.3) fractured his leg yesterday He has a temporary cast on at the moment and we have to go to fracture clinic tomorrow afternoon. That's all we know so far.

No experience of fractures/casts/etc so its going to be a STEEP learning curve! What do we need to know?

Poor things (you and him!)

Buy some cheap baggy tracksuit bottoms that can be cut down the side seam and sew on tapes or velcro to tie/join at the sides.

Complile a list of sit-down activities like:

-decorating cakes/biscuits
-playdough (a great recipe on MN if you do a search)
-gloop (cornflour and water -recipe also on MN)
-colouring (or painting if you are brave!)
-cutting out/tearing pictures out of magazines, Argos catalogues etc
-potato printing
-cheap craft kits, stickers etc from poundshops, The Works

Thanks so much for all the suggestions and sympathy.
Will be online to order the waterproof thingie once children are in bed, that looks a great idea.

DH stocked up on calpol, neurofen, chocolate buttons (to bribe him to take the neurofen!) and there will be wine in the fridge tonight

Seems OK (ish!) today now we have the calpol/neurofen balance sorted and coped pretty well at a friend's party, he even wanted to dance though made do with jiggling up and down in my arms!!

Any more suggestions most welcome.

My DS broke his leg when he was 2.We had maybe 6 changes of cast as they kept slipping down, making his foot straight!

IIRC the first night was the worst,so you may have got over the worst,as it was tight, itchy and heavy. We rested it on a Pillow in bed.

After that he was so adaptable, learnt to bottom shuffle to get to his toys.

My son did this at just gone age 3. I put him back in nappies at first. He stayed on the sofa in the day.

Gradually he found ways to get around and I think became able to sit on the potty (memory is a bit vague about this).

The cast was taken off at 4 weeks but a new one was put on for a further 2 weeks after an xray at the fracture clinic.

Best wishes

Just bumping this for the week day crowd.
All suggestions welcome.

Survived a second night and a icy/snowy walk to school - much harder work with a pushchair than a sledge!
Hopefully once proper cast is on it will get easier.

Thanks again everyone so far.
