What to feed toddler after vomiting and diarrhea?

He threw up out of the blue in the middle of the night, brought up his tea and his bedtime milk. Also had diarrhea for the last 24 hours. Today he hasn't been sick again but I've not fed him much, just some toast with butter this morning, some scrambled egg and bread for lunch, an actimel probiotic drink and cups of water.

Don't know what to give him for tea because we were going to have sausages, mash and peas. Does that sound ok, or should I give him something blander?

I have: porridge, rice pudding, yoghurt, cheese, bread, eggs, white fish (but he might not eat it) pasta, noodles, bananas, apples, etc - wwyd? Thanks

depends how he is generally.

That is a lot more food than i would give mine after sickness.

What does he want? Sometimes that will tell you how ill he really is.

DS2 was sick last week and he had taost and a chip butty the next day. DS1 was sick last night and i know he is fine now but he has still had v little today - toast, a small lunch and beans on taost

He's utterly fine, in himself. Just had diarrhea las night and this morning (no more since)

I don't know what he wants, sorry he's only 18 months, he can't tell me. Hmm...

There is the BRAT option, which stands for Bananas, Rice, Apple (stewed apple IIRC), Toast. All supposed to be well tolerated after D&V. I normally have some boiled rice with a few peas and some soy sauce for flavour when i have had this (but guess you would leave out the soy sauce for an 18 month old).

lol sorry i read toddler and for some reason thought of much older

If he is utterly fine just give him a smaller than usual portion

I'd stay off anything with dairy in it. It irritates the stomach after you've been ill.

I've tried dairy and non- dairy recoveries after D&V recently and non-dairy is much quicker and much more comfortable.

Good luck and hope DC gets better soon!

Thanks all. Oh dear he started crying for dinner in the meantime so I made him a small bowl of porridge with a stewed apple in it, then read no dairy! aargh. Oh well, he does seem fine so hopefully he'll tolerate the porridge. Does this mean I shouldn't give him his bedtime milk either? he'll scream blue murder without it.

It really depends on how ill he's been! When my kids have been ill recently I've just made them have stuff without dairy. If they want porridge it has to be without milk. Basically anything you can get away with doing without dairy, do it. Dairy makes you bloated, muccosy [sp], and more likely to bring anything you have eaten up while you have D&V.

Last time I had D&V I had a day off dairy and I was actually able to do up my trousers! Before that I was really badly bloated.
