I just don't know what to do for him anymore.

He does have asthma but ventolin inhaler isn't helping. GP has tried steroid inhaler but then said he doesn't think it's asthma causing the cough. Then he tried a steroid nasal spray incase it's a 'post-nasal drip'. This didn't help.

He said it's his throat tickling so have tried throat sweets, tickly cough medicine, anti-histamines etc. It's worst when he's at home but I really can't think of anything that could be triggering it and wonder if it's a habit?

He's been like this for months He's 9.

my ds is 11 and he used to cough continually. i would be really unsympathetic and tell him to shup up. i think hes got a weak chest tho we just got rid of crappy dusty heater and thats helped.but if he gets a cold he just sniffs up snot hence agrivating cough.iv steared clear of asthma things tho have some on standby he hasnt got asthma your son may grow out of it. i think its very common

thanks diatribe - I end up telling him to stop coughing but obviously he can't!

we have laminate floor, leather sofa, in his room he has a cover on his mattress and pillow, I open his window in the day, and use one of those ionisers to bring the dust down out of the air and damp dust and vacuum his room at least every other day.

I will try the pillow raising tonight - thank you.

good luck try not to worry

My DS (4) is exactly the same and we have had exactly the same advice/treatment from GP. He had several courses of anti-biotics over the past 8 months or so , plus sudafed for a 'post nasal' drip. He has seen two doctors re: asthma (which they don't think he has) and we have discussed allergies, but nothing seems to be an obvious trigger 9at first we thought it might be hay fever related, as he developed it over the summer...but it is still here in freezing Feb!). The last doctor we saw thought it could be a habit (caused by a post nasal drip that got better, but left him with the habit of coughing and constantly clearing his throat). Maybe. It's worrying though. Sometimes I hear him cough in the night, and think 'this is not normal'.

I do too MrsMattie, I wake up at night hearing him cough and then worrying. I do wonder if all the inhaler he has taken over the years has irritated his throat so I don't encourage him to take it now unless he's chesty.

I do think it's a habit but maybe I'm wrong, just feel at a loss as to what to do!
