hi, my daughter 23 months is suffering from terrible constipation, she has always suffered a little but it its getting more frequent. diet & water intake all good & is on 5ml of lactulose daily. it took her 7 hours of pain today to pass & it was awful for her (although stools were quite soft), i no she is scared & fighting it when its close. she had a pile at 1 yrs which she still has & i am concerned incase it may be something to do with her internally. off to docs in morning but can just hear it now ' water water water & maybe up the lactulose, please help if you can, i want to ease her pain in any way i can, thanks j

Sorry to hear that your DD is having this problem. Poor her. Would she eat dried fruits like prunes or apricots. It works for my DH, waitrose organic ready to eat prunes and apricots are great. And abit tummy massage?
I have no other ideas, but maybe others will be able to help more.

My dd has had chronic constipation for 2 years and we swear by movicol, the gps dont usually mention it till they have tried everything else (prob costs more) but it is the only thing that has worked for her, she has it in her milk every nite and has a poo at 6 the next evening x she has tried lactolose, laxoberal and senna and none of them agreed with her. Ask for movicol

Hi, my DD is 23 months, had really bad constipation at the weekend. She was ''trying'' to go and getting tired and sweaty with all the effort. I felt so sad for her, she kept saying ''poo poo'' and looking at me to help her. I just kept cuddling her.

In the end I sent DH out into the snow to get prune juice, and put a splash into her juice (disguised by pure OJ), and also into her night milk. This worked amazingly.

Hope she's better now

We are having the same problem with my 15mth old dd. As you said yourself, the consistency of the poo is soft & the quantity is good, but its the getting it out thats the issue! My dd sometimes squeezes so much she makes herself sick (sometimes out of her nose, too!). She drinks a lot of fluids, we have been giving her diluted apple juice at meals, prunes in her cereal, lots of fruit & veg, wholewheat cereal & bread, lots of kiwis, avoiding bananas & eggs (& 'binding' foods!),live bio yoghurts, 1tsp of olive oil in her dinners, smearing her bumhole with olive oil, & ALL the other recommended things that I have heard! But no luck. I am really reluctant to go down the laxative route, & she is healthy & happy in herself, just 'poo-time' is a lot of tears, straining & wandering around not knowing what to do with herself. I may try lactulose, tho - where do you get it from?
