dd seems to rely on calpole?

Please dont tell me what a crap mother I am. DD has always had really bad pain when teething and bonjela does not help or the powders, so I gave her calpole. The teething has got worse recently so maybe I gave it too often. And now I think se is addicted to it.

If she wakes at nigt she will not settle without it. I always try t be carefull about giving medican when she does not need it, but she seemed like she needed it alot recently.

I am not going to give her anymore now weather she needs it or not.

Can anyone recommend anything else that I can give her?

Or anything that has a similar taste and texture to calpole as would like to see if she will settle after having a 'fake' calpole. As if she does I will know that she is not really in pain.

try teething granuals or calgel/bongela/ambersol again

or try a spoonful of runny honey as a fake calpol but tbh you really want your dd to try and settle without medicine/something else

teething can be a nightmare and obv you dont want your dd to be in pain

Seona1973 · 31/01/2009 14:00

if your lo is under the age of 1 then dont do the runny honey as it isnt recommended before then.

newlysinglemummy · 31/01/2009 19:41

dd is 18months. I might try the honey just as a test to see if she is just playing up because she likes the calpole.

I will give bongela another try...

My sister gives her dd a spooful of something else (juice or similar) telling her it is medicine when she complains of a bogus ache.

She always falls for it.

You can get neurofen for children in Strawberry from Superdrug and it tastes EXACTLY like Calpol but is ibuprofen so is slightly better!

But yes you can use strawberry cordial from the supermarket to convince your DD. I used Abidec vitamin syrup (lemon flavour) when DD has a 'funny pain' (ie is faking it and I know she's faking it). It's amazing how quick it fixes the problem

noonki · 31/01/2009 20:25

My DS used to pretend his teeth hurt I'm sure just to get calpol, we gave him juice out of an old bottle slowly watering it down until he wasnt interested any more.,

I ended up just giving cuddles instead and teethers/granules as a distraction.

I'm sure someone will tell you about the debate about links to asthma and to much calpol that made us stop giving it.

newlysinglemummy · 01/02/2009 12:33

dd loves neurofen as well, she just loves medican...

I have tried giving dd diluted blackcurrant juice but I think she knows its a trick as keeps asking for more.

noonki - I have never heard about calpole being related to asthma?

calpol is not addictive, it is paracetamol. It does not make babies sleep either. The reason it seems to is because it is a PAIN KILLER, allowing children a break from the pain they are in in order to sleep when they need to.

Please don't withold pain treatment from your child. I promise you she is not addicted to it.

belgo · 01/02/2009 12:50

Bonjela is a hopeless painkiller. It's never helped me with mouth ulcers, so I'm not surprised when it doesn't help babies with teething.

Agree with Coldtits, paracetamol isn't addictive. I would carry on giving it if you think your child is in pain, maybe try first with a helf dose, then give another helf dose if the first one doesn't help.

belgo · 01/02/2009 12:51

half not helf!

bodiddly · 01/02/2009 13:05

If she is genuinely in pain I would give her the calpol or nurofen but if you are really concerned about her not needing it you could try a spoon of liquid multivitamins designed for little ones!

newlysinglemummy · 01/02/2009 13:31

i did try a spoon or liquid multivitamin, and she didn't drin it as it does not smell great.

Oh so you cannot get addicited to paracetamol? I didn't know that, I am not withholding pain killers on ourpose, but she seems to need it all the time and cannot dose her up on painkillers all day and night.

If she needs it she needs it. Take her to the doctors if she is in so much pain she needs calpol all the time, the doctor will at least reassure you that a) it's not addictive and b) you can give it whenever needed.

newlysinglemummy · 01/02/2009 16:25

good idea I think I will take her just to double check I am not overdosing my dd.
