Anyone know anything about head circumference being small in babies?

My DS just had his 8 mth development review today (although he is 11 months!)

Weight wise he was born on 50th centile.. has averaged out to 25th and maintained that line.

His height has been pretty constant on about 40th centile since he was born

His head circumference started on 50th centile, was on 75th the next 3 times he was measured (last time previously was when he was about 3 months old). Now at 11 months his head circumference is below the 10th centile.

HV checked it twice and its definitely correct. She said not to worry, it just indicates that he will be small framed when older.

It just strikes me as odd that its so out of sorts with his height and weight and that its dropped so dramatically since he was smaller...

Any thoughts?

Do you have any other concerns developmentally?

If not I shouldn't worry and your hv is probably right.

dd has a small head size due to her condition, she has abnormal brain development and learning delays amongst other things.

I am sure if the hv had been concerned she would have referred on.Are you all quite dainty?

No other concerns no.
DH and DS1 are tall, big feet etc but I am a short arse and fairly petite (couldnt call myself dainty though lol) so perhaps DS2 will take after me then??

I'm not really worried tbh, just find it very strange that it could change so much out of proportion. Perhaps it will become more in line again as he grows older?

Although saying that all his development so far is physical, such as crawling etc. I've no idea about the learning stuff until he starts talking I guess.

Thanks for your reply!

Aaah bless him.I am sure if he is doing stuff age appropriately he will be fine

Guess there is no such thing as a "textbook" baby

With dd her delayed dev.was apparent quite early.

iirc true "microcephaly" is classed as being on 2.5 percentile or below.

please try not to worry, easier said than done,I know

2pt4kids - this is normal - all babies vary when it comes to the skull bones fusing - some fuse at 6 months (although this is unusual) some as late as 18 months. If he is fine developmentally then it's okay.

Measuring head circumference is a very inexact science - as is doing a baby's length - all you can really do is say "well it's about....cms". Also everyone measures heads differently - add to that a baby wriggling around and you have the potential for a fair amount of error.

As wrinklytum says I think if you have no concerns about his development then I wouldn't worry.

My dd2 has 'microcephaly' and her head circumference is well below the bottom of the chart - tbh her development was delayed right from the start.

All this measuring is a bit unnecessary I think on the whole and just makes us worry!
