Can a 6 year old be prescribed tablets (and will he be able to swallow?) instead of medcine?

Ds has some really vile medcine. I am battling with him but he is refusing to take it.

Will the GP prescribe tablets instead?

might be able to - do you reckon he could swallow them though? Try first with a tic tac (NB that is probably not great advice)

depends if they make the same medicine exactly as a tablet. Why don't you see if he can swallow a vitamin pill and if he can ask the Dr.
My 6 year old DD takes vits and efas so she could manage a pill.

I managed to get DS to take vile tasting tablets when he was 4 1/2 - there was no liquid equvatlent and Nutella helped it go down .
Whether your Gp can prescribe tablets instead of medicine depends on dose and whether tablets are breakable if the smaller child's dose demands it, IYKWIM.
Worthwhile asking about, anyway.
Good luck!

I need to get this into him and he is ADAMANT it is not going anywhere near his lips. Don't blame him tho, it smells of vomit.

I had the same problem and mixed it up in melted chocolate. Went down a treat.

Whether he could swallow would depend on the size of the tablet. But a spoon of jam on top of travel sickness pills always works for my DS.

It is worth ringing the pharmacy and asking if they do it in other flavours or if there are different brands

My son takes tablets every day and swallows them with no problem and has for a couple of years now, since he was around five. His are only tiny though, but he does a few at a time.

DrNortherner · 29/01/2009 19:48

He did it! Went back to GP and she was happy to prescribe tablets as she agreed this is a partic vile medicine......

Anyway, 20 minutes of trying, we got it down. I'm so proud of him.

When they were 3 and 5 we taught the boys to swallow tablets using haribo sweeties cut up. We started with just tiny bits and quickly moved onto larger pieces. Within 20 mins practising they could manage 'large tablet sized' pieces.

It's great - far better than faffing about with medicine - and so easy.

I have vivid memories of being unable to swallow tablets as a young child and finding it very traumatic. My mum would crush them up and mix them with marmalade - yuck!
