Severe nosebleeds (REALLY bad) in 9-year-old

Lots of kids get nosebleeds, but my son gets scary ones that can last up to an hour, plus he chokes up large blood clots, at least once, often twice per nose bleed.

While he has a history of ordinary nosebleeds, these bad ones have been going on for about 2 months.

He's going the GP early next week.

I wonder, does anyone else's child suffer with this? What could be causing it? I'd like to go to the GP armed with a worst-case-scenario mentality...I'd rather not be surprised.

Any thoughts or advice much appreciate.

[by the way, we know the medical fundamentals of "how to stop nosebleeds" and we do it correctly, just to no avail.]

Has your ds ever had any veins in his nose cautherised? My brother used to suffer really bad nosebleeds (looked like someone had slaughtered an animal in the bathroom). They cautherised two veins in his nose on two seperate occassions as they were very close to the surface and it seemed to fix the problem.

thanks so much for responding trixie

funnily enough my daughter has had her nose cauterized. She, too, had frequent nosebleeds--but she was picking her nose (she was 3 at the time), and the bleeds weren't spontaneous as is the case with DS.

That would be a relief if just requires cauterizing and isn't one of my catastrophic scenarios like clotting disorders or some kind of blood cancer.

I used to suffer from severe nosebleeds at around this age, sometimes just a change in the temperature/atmosphere would start one and they were as hurrendous as you are describing. I still don't know to this day what caused them apart from sometimes being under a bit of stress but nothing out of the ordinary for a young/teenage girl. Hope you find out the route of it and get something sorted but it might just be something that passes in time...?

Thanks PLP, that's reassuring.

I used to suffer from nosebleeds tooI'd get them constantly at school and everywhere reallybut ds's nosebleeds are on a whole different scale, probably like yours were. Must not have been very nice for you!

Medea - I used to have severe nosebleeds and have had my nose cauterised twice. Have you been to A&E when it's bleeding this bad? If it's still bleeding after 20 minutes of pinching then I'd be tempted TBH because they'd probably do it for you there and then or at least book you in to get it done.

My 16 yr old has suffered really bad nosebleeds in the last couple of months ie waking in the night to find his nose bleeding.

The GP at his (boarding) school had a look and he had an open wound up there. He had had a really bad cold beforehand and this had caused the problem. She gave him some cream to use and he had to be careful with blowing etc. It seems to have done the trick.

Sometimes vaseline can help with the lining of the nose and providing a barrier - it did help my son before he saw the GP.

Just to update: the GP said DS probably just needs his nose to be cauterized, but ordered some blood tests to be sure. I'll know more next week, but in the meantime have made an appointment for cauterization.
