Why is ribena better than just plain water?

we always had lucozade when we were ill. it's still the ill drink and i always dash out to get it when dh is ill.

nappyaddict · 28/01/2009 12:44

I can't get him to drink anything but I know he will drink milk. You're not supposed to give them dairy are you but do you think it's better than nothing? He's not had a drink since 6am.

How bad is he? How old is he now?

Bubbaluv · 28/01/2009 12:52

Watered down milk?

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 28/01/2009 12:57

Flat coke is also good for D&V ( only thing it is really good for!!)

It's also good for getting rid of dead locusts stuck in the vent on the front of your car when there's a locust plague. It disolves them over night.

He's 2.7 He's lying next to me crying He hasn't moved all day. Woke at 6am. Went back to sleep at 9 and woke up at 12 but is still lying on the sofa. When I sat him up he was lolling all over the place and he can't stand his legs are all wobbly and he falls over. Success with the milk. Shall I put some sugar in it?

DS was like that for a week just before Christmas - poor little sausage! It's just aweful.
Have a look at the skin on his tummy - if you squeaze it up - like a gentle pinch - and it goes straight back to normal then he's in no real danger. If it stays gathered or slowly returns to flat then you need to get him medical attention for dehydration.
They can get pretty damn revolting before they reach that sort of stage though, so just keep offering liquids - get some dioralyte when/if you get a chance and let him get lots of sleep.
Anyone else got ideas?

nappyaddict · 28/01/2009 13:21

Is it ok to let him sleep then? He fell back to sleep about an hour after he woke up from sleeping for 3 hours. Wasn't sure whether to wake him or not.

I'm not medically trained, but would think it was the best thing for him really.

Nagapie · 28/01/2009 14:11

You are aware that Ribena is not recommended for children under 3 years of age?

nappyaddict · 28/01/2009 14:12

Why not Nagapie?

Flat coke was always recommended to us (non diet coke) The salts and sugars in it are similar to those in the rehydration drinks and most kids will happily drink it (not great for the teeth though!)

nappyaddict · 28/01/2009 14:51

Yep tried giving it in a bottle and in a cup with a straw. He's fetched the milk back up which is hardly surprising but I'm hoping at least some of it will have stayed down and keep him hydrated.

Poor little mite. Good luck.

nappyaddict · 29/01/2009 16:40

Oh no. Sound slike what DS had before Chirstmas. Im afraid it lasted a week! He would look like he was improving a bit then towards the end of the day up it would all come. At least you can keep them hydrated if there are decent breaks between hurls.
We had to have the sofa and 2 duvees cleaned!

nappyaddict · 29/01/2009 17:59

DS is the same. Always seems to puke in the evening.

Actually my DD (10) has something like this in the summer that went on and on for about 10 days. The doctor we took her to said to go dairy free for a few days as the gut can become temporarily lactose intolerant after a bug and that can prolong the vomiting.

We tried it and the sickness stoppped immediately.
