5 year old sore legs

Is it really possible to have growing pains? My ds is 5 years old and he wakes me in the night (otherwise a good sleeper) to complain of sore legs. It's not cramp and he was in tears in the playground this morning about it. My dd never had this, but I am open to the idea of it being very real, as he's not one to cry wolf. Any thoughts?

my ds had pain in his legs periodically-always at night and always agonising but thankfuly short-lived. This I assume is what is meant by growing pains. It was Cramp-like and worse after a hard walk or huge exercise. If your ds is complaining of pain in the daytime too-get him checked over.

ds gets this. he is in a lot of pain with it, usually at night.
I think it's growing pains

My Dd(almost 9) is suffering with this at the moment too and has done periodically for a few years and does coincide with a growth spurt

I can remember being woken with pains when I was a child (very much like toothache but in your legs)

I have given her nurofen for children and it seems to ease the pain

How long has he been complaining about this? And is he otherwise well?

How about giving him some Calpol/Brufen before bedtime to see if that allows him to sleep through? If simple measures like that help, unlikely to be anything serious. If it goes on longer than, say, 10-14 days, I would see GP.

Nobody knows what growing pains are, but some kids seem to get them, usually v active boys.

have you checked his feet. podiatrist told us to watch out for painful legs can sometimes be an indicator of problems with feet.

Both of mine got growing pains at night link here.

I did give them calpol a couple of times, but usually managed to fob them off with magic cream type stuff (my face cream or whatever I could grab like Nivea iirc!).

They'd be fine in the morning though. I must say it did take me a few nights to realise they weren't making it up.

that's all really great. Thanks so much. Yes - he is almost growing before my own eyes - his trousers are shorter on him and a we look at him and he suddenyl seems so lanky. At swimming the other day his teacher did comment about his left foot being tight, so I suppose it might be linked. Interesting thought. If it happens again tonight I'll give some calpol/ibuprofen because it really does seem to be causing him pain. Great advice.
