19mo temp of 39 with a cold: should I worry?

DD has had a progressively worse cold since the weekend. Today she has been very subdued and sat with DH on the sofa all day, which is very unlike her.

When I got in I took her temp (under the arm) which was 38.6 but she had a vest and a fleecy sleepsuit on as DH was worried about her being cold. So I took the fleece off and left her in a vest for half an hour. Have taken her temp again and it is 39. Should I worry? Not sure what to do as she has not been poorly before.

She is drinking, and eating a very little. Refusing all the favourites, yoghurt, satsuma though apparently she ate some toast and crackers today. She hasn't had any calpol yet but I'll give her some before bed. Not sure at what point to take her to the dr as she just has a cold as far as I can tell.

She is now in the bath and has perked up a bit. Would appreciate any advice.

I would give her the calpol now to bring her temp down.No sense in waiting, quicker it's in her system the quicker it will come down.

Also strip her off to her vest seems cruel but its what d would advise to get temp down. Try and get as much fluid into her as possible - jelly and ice cream count as fluid.

If no better in morning and you are still worried docs never mind seeing children even if it turns out there is nothing too wrong - mine have often made a miracle recovery in the waiting room

Bumper why are you waiting about the calpol? You'd be best to give it now and some nurofen if you've got any a bit later - keep alternating, it might really help her be more comfy iyswim.

DD2 is 17mo, and had a cold for a few days, then wouldn't eat or drink. That evening her temp was 40.2, then an hour after calpol was 40.3.

I was told by out of hours to take her to A&E. They checked her over, kept us for a couple of hours and gave her more calpol, then sent us home.

The next night she vomitted all night, then was pretty much fine the following day.

I think that if she is drinking that is a good sign, but keep an eye out for funny rashes.

gosh you're lucky she hasn't been ill before! dd, 8 months has had this at least 3 times so far. Calpol definitely if now 39. It is likely to go up over night. if calpol brings it down she should be ok.

BoffinMum · 26/01/2009 19:32

The fact that she has perked up in the bath is a very good sign, as is eating toast. Just keep her in a vest and nappy, alternate Calpol and Nurofen, offer her fluids, keep her room on the coolish side and like lou said, you probably want to watch out for rashes.

Ok thanks. I'll give her some calpol now. DH has been home with her all day. He wouldn't really think to give it to her unless she was really cranky.

i think how well she is with it is key - some children run high temps more easily than others. If she is feeling better and the calpol keeps the temp down and there is no pin prick rash she should be fine.

Bumperslucious · 26/01/2009 20:46

She did have a rash but it disappeared under a glass. She has gone to bed now in just PJs, no vest and no blanket, though well cover her up before bed as it's gets pretty cold.

She was ok with it, not cranky, just subdued and snuggly. Thanks for the advice. DH will be under instuctions to give calpol in the morning if she is still bad and dr's if temp still high.

keep an eye on the rash. dd has had three rashes so far with a temp, whereas ds has had none so far!

Bumperslucious · 27/01/2009 18:51

Been to dr's today. She said it was the right thing to do though not much she can do, just calpol and calprofen.

Meanwhile last night DD was up 10-11.30 then 3am until I had to go to work
