Hi, my 2 year old has been constipated on and off for the past month or so, i spoke to my HV who said that i should increase his fluids and fruit and veg which i have been trying to do. He can go 3 days without having a bowel movement. Sometimes he strains than seems to lose interest and he has'nt passed anything but when i go to change him there can be a little staining in his nappy. Last night i noticed that he had done that and the staining looked a reddish brown. I suffer from health anxiety and tend to imagine the worst case scenarios so now i'm worried that there could be a serious problem. He did have strawberry jelly twice last week so not sure if that could colour the stool or not. If anyone has experienced anything like this it would help an extremely over anxious mum to calm down.

Thanks.

most likely is that he has a little fissure if he is straining and constipated.
unlikely to be anything more sinister but go to Gp as if is a fissure will mean its painful to go so will make contsipation worse

thanks for replying, i'm not sure about it being a fissure as it does'nt really seem like blood as such just the staining in his nappy appeared to be a reddish brown colour rather than spots of blood. Still waiting for him to have a bowel movement, he has'nt had one since Friday evening. Trying not to panic but not very successful!

yes strawberry jelly can colour poo red, I was about to suggest that as a possibility.
