My 5 year old son has been prescribed this by the 'poo clinic'. He needs to take one sachet daily. Can anyone tell me anything about it? Is it best to given early on or later in the day? I know every child is different but how long did it take for it to work it's way through? My big fear is that the urge will take him when he's at school and, because he refuses to use the loo, he'll mess himself and end up embarrassed by the whole thing.

I would give it as soon as he gets home from school as soemtimes it does have a drastic effect.

if he has had constipation for a long time it may take a while to work anyway but wouldnt want to chance it.

by the way it tastes vile so put it in a drink that will disguise it that he really likes and thinks is a treat such as coca cola or hot chocolate

Movicol takes around 8 hours to work but will vary between children. It will take a little while for you to work out what time of day is best for your ds but at least you have the weekend coming up so you can try then without wories about school. It tastes a bit grim, like salty water but you can add a little squash to improve the flavour. Don't dilute it more than the instructions on the pack - 62.5mls water from memory otherwise it's less effective. Provide lots of water to drink atther times as Movicol uses he water to work. HTH.

my dd has been on movicol for 18 month and we swear by it. She has it in her milk evry night (she doesnt know it is there), if he can taste it you can put it on ice cream or mix it in with a yogurt, my dd can taste it in juice, It also goes quite well in lemonade, just keep stirring it till you cant see it anymore. My dd has it every nite and has a poo the next evening at 6.15 exactly!

Hi, my 4 year old is currently on this. Is he currently pooing? if it likely to be a bit of an explosion when it happens then it might be worth waiting to Friday night to start it or even keeping him off school for a few days. My little girl did have quite a few accidents as first as we got used to the dose etc, it does take careful balancing to get the right dose but when it does, it works a dream. We give it at tea time, in about 1/3 of a cup of juice with a dash of ribena to cover the taste (it's pretty vile tasting) - there is no way we could hide it from dd and I think it's important that she knows why she's having it as it's important for her to take some responsibility for her poos iyswim. She tends to poo now every night after dinner. Good luck, take it easy, it is hard hard work and there will many tears along the way but you can do it.

My 7 year old has been on it since she was 5. Now down to one teaspoon a day.

She has it at bedtime

Mix it with a little squash at it tastes vile.

Does not actually get absorbed by body. Passes through to gut where it attracts water, which softens the stools.

There is more info on here I have found it very informative.

Thanks for this. I've had a look at the website and it's very helpful (although I must confess I have an unhealthy obsession with the whole household's poo now!)
We were hoping to start him on it last weekend when we were at home the whole time but the chemists conspired against us by not having it in stock! I've managed to get some today but am going to wait until Friday to start him on it.

I agree, initially can be a job to get the right balance, but once you find the dose that works I don't think it matters when they have it, as it won't be beyond their control when to go. Dd2 has hers in squash during the morning, will only ever poo at home so on playgroup days she tends to poo once she gets home, other days it can vary a little more.

You can get a bit obsessed! LOL we used to have a copy of The Bristol Stool chart beside our toilet....

Agree it can take a whilet o get the dose right... Poor DD had to wear pull ups to school for a while becasue she was having so many accidents
