2 year old with ongoing constipation

My 2 yr old DS, 3 next month has had constipation on and off since he was potty trained at the beginning of October. It has got particularly bad since Christmas, so the dr started with prescribing lactulose, 1 teaspoon in the morning and 1 in the evening. Not much seemed to improve, so last week he was prescribed senna liquid, 1 teaspoon in the eve which he took for 5 evenings. The lactulose dose has now been increased to 3 teaspoons am and then 3 in the eve. Again, there hasn't been much improvement. He will pass anything up to 12 tiny poos in an afternoon/evening, so he is constantly on and off the toilet/potty which we have started using again for convenience sake. He doesn't seem to get a lot of notice that he needs to go & will often do it in his pants, but as they are so tiny and hard they just stick in his bum anyway. He has been prescribed a stronger laxative which he has just had for the 2nd night, but today all we have had is a 20pence size piece of poo. He's not brilliant at drinking enough, so I don't think this helps loads, but he loves smoothies so he's been having quite a bit of this as well as diluted fruit juice. He's not brilliant with veg, but has fruit daily and wholemeal bread, wholemeal pasta, shreddies, weetabix etc. & he eats dried apricots. I'm getting really worried now as nothing seems to be clearing his system & I suppose I'm concerned its something more than constipation. The dr doesn't seem concerned and is putting it down to being a common problem you get after potty training, but he hasn't examined him, just prescribed the medicines. Help please.....this is so frustrating and worrying I really don't know what to do for the best.

1ontheway, it coulkd be his diet! i know that too much of the wrong fibre can actually cause constipation.

fwiw my ds1 was prone to constipation and the biggest culprit was weetabix. he is 4 now and still gets constipated even eating just one serving of it. cutting it out helped immensely.

it is also important that he eats fruit/veg and drinks plenty. fibre is good, but it needs liquid too!
