did you know that all it is is peanut oil.
i would be very care full incase of allergic reaction, i only say this due to this happening to my mum with me ( SEVERe ALLERGIC REACTION!). i used dentinox cradle cap shampoo, and coated my DS head in either olive oil or vasaline, a few weeks later no more problems.

Thanks for the advice, yes it says that it's peanut oil on the label. So does it have any other property other than being oil? Could I use any oil?
How could I test to see if my dd has an allergic reaction? Just dab a tiny bit on her skin? Actually it would be useful to know if she has an allergy or not.
What do you think?

I just use olive oil, leave for half an hour or so, then rub (with my fingertips) or comb the area and shampoo out (takes two shampooings to get the oil out).

belgo · 22/01/2009 12:21

I would also use olive oil.

Your Gp must be very out of date. We used to use arachis oil in the 70s before people were aware of peanut allergy.

I agree with previous posters, don't use it. Olive oil is much better and safer.

Thanks.
Is baby oil not as good? Not as natural?

Baby oil is horrid IMO. It is mineral based (petroleum). Mine were all allergic to it.

belgo · 22/01/2009 12:30

Baby oil often has perfumes and other things added. I would take the arachis oil back to the pharmacy and just use olive oil, if you need to use anything.

I also wouldn't use shampoos as these also contain perfumes and chemicals, and I think that's what caused my ds's cradle cap.

thanks all!

Absolutely the best thing that I ever discovered for cradle cap (my poor son had it until he was about 6! so overlapped with school & nit combing) was a nit comb. It's just so tempting to scratch the flakes off with a finger, but that leaves the scalp sore and raw sometimes. The nit comb just seems to gently rake off the dead skin without damaging the underlayers. Make sure it's one of those metal ones with rounded tines though- the plastic ones are far too pointy to use on a baby, and be very gentle.

yes I used a nit comb as well, but you do have to be very careful (obviously).
