BABY BOY AND HIS WILLY, A CHICKEN AND EGG QUESTION.

DS 8 months bless him has found his willy! not a problem obviously but he is scratching and pulling it so much he is making himself sore. He looks like he is itchy. When he doesn't scratch the skin looks normal with no dryness or infection but as soon as he starts it looks awful. So chicken and egg : is it itchy so he scratches and pulls or is he making it this way by scratching and pulling.
I have been putting sudocrem on it when it looks very raw, is this ok?

Sudocrem is fine. Do you think it's a reaction to his nappies or just boy curiosity?

Stupid Q really but how does your ds get to it? Ds couldn't really until I stopped putting him in nappies and popper vests.

ds pulls his in the bath and i just let him get on with it, other than that he doen't have the chance as he's normally in nappies.

I would just try and stop him where possible untill it's not so sore. If you are worried maybe you could take a wet nappy to the dr's and they could test the urine possibly.......... not sure if that's possile or if babies get urine infections.

He only really has access to it on the changing mat or at bath time but he's very determined and you have to hold his arms out of the way to put the nappy on. I think it is just boy curiosity as he forgets about it when he has a nappy on ( I would imagine if he was itchy he might go at it or be distressed even when dressed.)
Thanks.

Yes, babies can get urine infections, however to test for them you need urine that has been caught in an appropriate container not a nappy. I was in hospital with my little one recently and they used a bag stuck around his willy under the nappy to catch the urine to test for a UTI (he's 10 weeks). The nurse said that if anything was spotted from that collection method, they'd then have to wait and catch fresh urine in a cup to make sure they had a clean sample and retest. Luckily, they didn't have to.

If Sudocrem doesn't do the trick, I found Bepanthen works better for my little one. I guess I shall have the "fun" of my son discovering his willy at some point.
