Vomiting and weight loss in 6 month old - long, sorry!

Hi,

Have been having some problems with my daughter's weight gain, she was 8 lbs 6 at birth and was tracking the 75th centile up until she was about 7 weeks old. At this point she started to gain weight so slowly that she dropped to the 9th centile. The last time she was weighed (at 20 weeks) she was 13 lbs 7 but the doctor said that as she is reaching her milestones and seems happy and healthy there is nothing to worry about. She was completely breast fed until the 24th December at which point I started introducing the bottle in readiness for her start at nursery. She took to it well and seemed to be gaining weight.

She started at nursery last week and even though she is nearly 6 months old she just seems so tiny next to the other babies. Then, in the early hours of Friday morning she started vomiting. She threw up 3 entire feeds and had a temperature. I rang NHS direct who advised giving cooled, boiled water and making an apppointment with the Dr. I could only get an appointment with the prescribing nurse but she checked my DD thoroughly and said to continue what I was doing and slowly introduce milk if my daughter could keep down the water. I did this and she threw up for the last time on Friday night.

I thought things were getting back to normal, she didn't have a big appetite but was taking milk and keeping it down then, about an hour ago, she threw up a whole feed again. I am feeling really worried, I rang NHS direct again and they advised to try and feed her as normal and supplement with water if she can't hold anything down. I just feel so helpless, she is so little and has visibly lost weight over the weekend. She is meant to be going to nursery tomorrow so I can return to work but I think I'm right in thinking that she can't return until she has been free of vomiting for 48 hours. I'm stressed about money, I know my partner really needs me to go back to work but if my DD is ill I can't... I just feel really helpless!

In regards to the weight gain before the vomit, my DD is 11mo and was 7lb 12 and dropped down to 7lb straight after, shes skinny little thing, she still looks quite small compared to other babies, but i'm not worried as she has reached all her milestones and is a happy soul.

I can't really help with the vomiting, but perhaps a milk allergy? I breastfed, but had issues with my supply so had to introduce formula, she was never a sicky baby until she started on formula, she found it hard to digest, doctor gave her infant gaviscon, but didn't get round to using it, as she seemed to outgrow pretty quickly. I would take her back to the GP and see what they say.

Mmm mini eggs! You've made me want them now!

DD seems better today, she took small feeds and didn't throw up. We'd actually been prescribed infant gaviscon because she has been quite fussy during and after feeds for while. Wouldn't help with the vomiting the other day as that was literally the whole feed.

Think I am probably worrying unnecessarily, she seems happy and well in herself so I guess she is just destined to be little...
