dd2 was doing ok, but as I've read can happen we've hit the 5th day post-op and she has dreadful ear/throat pain. Probalby scabs healing/falling off.

She's thin as a rake and won't drink milk anymore, just water and a tiny bit of food...she was only 10kg when she had the op, underweight for a 2.2 yr old.

I've been ok, but am now a bit shaky (lack of sleep dosn't help): can anyone who's been through this reassure me, please?

check she hasn't a temperature. I got a post-op infection which made the pain much worse.

aGalChangedHerName · 18/01/2009 20:59

Could she have an infection? I had mine out at 19 and was fine for nearly 5 days then huge amounts of pain. Had an infection and needed ab's.

Poor dd2,she's so little to be going through that Hope she's better soon x

Elibean · 18/01/2009 21:34

Poor both of you, going through this as adults - apparently its even worse!

No, no temp, and she's on broad spectrum antibiotics already...just in case...though I have a hard time getting her to take them.

I read that the scabs start falling off around day 5, and the pain goes into the ears? She's not bad during the day, but very sore at night and clutching her ears.

I did wonder about thrush, though...

Could be thrush... in that case lots of live yogurt and talk to gp about anti thrush stuff.

Poor chickadee. Is it the lying down thats causing the problem?

aGalChangedHerName · 18/01/2009 22:51

Can you see anyhting in her throat? Thrush wise?

If no better i would see the gp tbh. Just in case x

I had mine out when I was 18 and remember the terrible ear pain. Poor little sausage. The ear pain is often worse than the throat pain. Is it preventing her from eating? What did the doctor say about pain relief?

littlelamb · 18/01/2009 23:10

I had mine out two years ago. If you suspect the scabs have fallen off (and trust me you can't mistake it ) then things will start to improve from now. It will feel like agony in her ears, and like her I was alright in the day but just crying with pain at night. You really must try and encourage her to eat as it will help prevent infection. And do let her rest- I completely underestimated how much a GA would take it out of me- the fatigue is unbelievable. I don't know what medications they will give to a child but morphine and codine were my saviours. And if they are anything like my hospital they will have sent you home with some just paracetamol but htey fully expect you to go back for something a bit stronger after a few days. Hope she is feeling better soon.

My ds2 had his out last summer age 17. He came out of hospital with slow release ibuprofen tablets and soluable parcetamol and codine. He was still in a lot of pain (not normally a wuss despite being male!!) particularly at the stage your dd is at. I'd see the gp re. pain relief then you stand a better chance of getting her to eat. My elder ds has had extensive oral surgery (he was born with a cleft palate) and it is horrible seeing them in pain. I hope she gets better soon. My ds2 has been so much better since he had his out. I wish it had been done when he was much younger. It would have saved many horrible bouts of tonsilitus including a bad one during his gcses.

oh, poor DD Elibean. I think you're right about scabs/healing now. We had a horrid day yesterday, DS was very sensitive and melting down with little provocation. He was unsettled last night waking crying many times in the night. He has some spots on his cheeks(always gets them when unwell) and he has been holding and picking these whilst crying so I think he has pain in his mouth but doesnt know how to ease it. He wouldn't eat either yesterday, wanted stuff, but then either spat it out, or just refused to try. He did however demolish a huge portion of jelly
Fortunately I dont have to worry about his weight or not eating, he has plenty of reserves at 16kg.
I would try tempt her with anything. DS would always try something like coca cola as it is such a rare treat. Her eating will pick up soon I'm sure once the pain eases and she learns she can eat it now.
I would probably pop to GP today if you cant get her to drink especially, will make you feel reassured if nothing else.
Let me know how she is today, x

Thanks so much, all of you, that really helps

Was feeling all wobbly and alone about it last night. Can't see anything in mouth, but won't open it far. Am pretty sure its ears/scabs type stuff but may take to GP today in case - any reassurance will be good, plus she refused her ABs last night (took them this morning, and she's had 5.5 days' worth, but still worries me).

Yes, its mostly at night and lying down. She doesn't want to go to bed, fights it (more than usual!) and refused nap yesterday though napped 3+ hours previous days. Pain relief is Voltarol suppositories and paracetamol, seem to work well (esp the Voltarol). Codeine not encouraged for kids by our hospital, they say if its needed the child should be in as something else up

She's eating, not much, but normal diet - including crisps, bread, cauliflower, sausage, bit of fish finger last night. Tiny amounts, but she didn't eat much before either - big change is the milk, which she doens't want.

My other big worry is that I have had a sore throat for the last 3 days, and she is clinging to me and sleeping with me atm....I've worked hard to keep all risks of infection at bay, and here I am being the worst one

Lubbly, so sorry ds had a bad day too - though also selfishly reassured, it does seem to be par for the course around this time. Hopefully, healing for both of them! I do hope he hsa a better day today, xxx

She woke up shaking with pain, howled till she'd had her Voltarol, then five minutes later ate small bowl of dry branflakes, half a cupcake, and then half an ice lolly and now a small piece of bread.

Doubt its thrush then?

OP posts:
aGalChangedHerName · 19/01/2009 13:48

Hmm if it was thrush i reckon it might be on her tongue too which you could see?

Keep on with the pain medication and if you are still worried i would phone the gp just for advice on the phone.

It was very bloody painful when i think back so poor dd will be miserable

Marthasmama · 19/01/2009 17:52

It's good that she's eating as that will help clear the scabs. I remember that the taste of certain foods was affected and milk tasted terrible. I have no idea why that was, but it could by why she's not having her milk.

Elibean · 19/01/2009 21:11

Thanks, and yes, that makes sense re the milk. She wants it first thing (with ABS in!) then refuses it any other time.

She's been ok today except for after nap (lying down, I guess) and when pain meds wear off....lying down is definitely the worst.

So helpful having inside info from those of you who've had it done, thanks!
