We had the appt yesterday, BabyG was 10 weeks old. The Ophthalmologist said he thought he was fine, but we'll be referred on to someone else (can't remember who) after he is 3 months old so they can measure muscles etc??

Reason for initial referral was he wasn't focusing as well as he might have been at 6 week check, and he has a squint sometimes. It has improved a lot since 6 week check though

Do you have any experience of this?

My DD wasn't focussing properly at 12 weeks so was referred due to family history.

She is now 5 and has been signed off, all fine.

She had a horrific eye injury at 22 months and still has perfect eyesight.

I would try not to worry and see it as a positive thing that BabyG is being well looked after.

My Dd1 was referred at an early age as she had a squint. She has been wearing glasses since she was 4 months old.. I can't remember a lot about it though.. They dilated her pupils and checked her eyes.

Do you know, I did type NAB and then felt wrong calling somebody else that! Love the new name

Thanks SGK - so was just glasses, no horrid operations etc?

I have to go pick DH up now but will check back later, hopefully tomorrow, so please don't htink I'm a rude cow who posts and runs!

two of our kids had big squints as small babies

one grew out it by 12 months

one got glasses at 13 months but woudln't wear them and had an op at 24 months. his eyes are still not straight at 36 months although he does wear his glasses now. they wont operate again until he is school age

i think that the main thing they are checking is that baby DOES use both eyes. if he doesnt and its not picked up til later then then there can be problems. so better to be on teh safe side

i woudl be reassured that your GP / HV are on the ball and you are seeing paediatric ophthalmologist so soon

no nasty op, mamag, just glasses and eye patches. She is 8 now and still has glasses

MamaG · 19/01/2009 14:32

both mine have squints, dd has quite a noticeable one and also poor eyesight. it's not as bad as it all sounds, most eye issues either resolve as they grow, or are easily sorted with glasses and maybe a bit of patching.

Thanks lk
