Cradle Cap - what is the best remedy?

My ds3 is almost 6 months and has terrible cradle cap all over his head. Excema runs in the family. We only bathe him about once a week . What is the best way to get rid of it?

I massaged some olive oil into ds's scalp and left it for a couple of hours. It seemed to soften the scales and I combed it out with a soft brush.

It was messy, took a few goes, left his scalp a little red and a bit of hair came out with the scales. Oh, and his hair looked darker and a bit greasy for a couple of days afterwards - it's quite hard to wash out the olive oil.

So, I guess it depends how much the cc bothers you. I don't think it does them any harm, just doesn't look that nice (and you probably notice more than other people will)? I'm one of those people who can't help picking though and I didn't want the temptation

Oil and then comb out. It come of like a kind of sludge but it's very, very satisfying.

I sat in the bath with my DD and put loads of organic baby hair conditioner on her head. Then combed her hair through with an adult comb very softly. It took a while but we were having a nice time together in the bath. It too was very very satisfying to see all the cradle cap come out. Most of it came out on the first bath, I then finished it off a couple of days later with another double bath. (Just not sure whether the conditioner would suit your son's excema).
Wouldn't be concerned about the once a week bath. I bought so many bottles of baby wash before my daughter was born. She passed her first birthday and we were still on the first one!

My DT's had bad cradle cap for a few months. Rubbing Virgin Olive Oil in then using a soft brush was the onlt thing that really helped. I also used cradle cap shampoo.

looking the other way until their hair's long enough that you can't see it

disclaimer: it never bothered mine at all, obv if it's itching them, bleeding etc. that's different.

olive oil overnight and comb through the next day.

also wash hair more regularly as its the build up of natural oils that can cause the build up that contributes to the cc. I thought washing it would make the cc worse but actually I made it worse by not washing it as regularly iyswim.

Very interesting - thanks everyone. He has very short hair so it is noticeable and it is flaking. I can't put it on overnight as he co-sleeps next to me - yuck!

However, I will certainly put some on and then bathe him more often. I don't think we have a soft brush (3 boys with short hair - we rarely need one!) but I can find one I'm sure.

hi IlanaK coconut oil works well too - in the same way as olive oil though so if you don't have it don't buy it especially

MissisBoot · 15/01/2009 22:05

can you put a towel down and then it won't get everywhere?

likessleep · 15/01/2009 22:07

jojoba oil worked for my ds, where olive oil didn't. it isn't cheap, but a few days of rubbing it in, to then get a brush to it and get those little scales off, as everyone says, so satisfying!
ds has eczema too, but the jojoba oil was fine for him.

trixymalixy · 15/01/2009 22:08

Olive oil and comb it out/pick it off.

My DD had bad cradle cap, and I was too much of a woose to do anything about it when she was young. I thought it would disappear naturally. Well it didn't, and it was a bit of a challenge to get rid of it once her hair was longer and she was old enough to object. Do it now!
