Newborn with runny stools or dihorreah?

Ds is 15 days and has had three nappies-one every night for three days-that are really runny.
Sorry to be graphic but it is the consistancy of mustard from a squeezy bottle.
Is this classed as dihorreah or just runny stools?
He was born three and a half weeks early and had antibiotics whilst in special care (only 48 hours).
Should i be concerned or is this quite normal for a FF baby?
Can't remember what my ds1 nappies were like as he is now 3 and a half!

That sounds totally normal for a newborn to me. Mine were breastfed though at that age and I know bf babies have runnier nappies - totally liquid in fact. What were his nappies like before this? I think 1 nappy per night certainly isn't diahorreah (how do you spell that ) though - it would need to be much more frequent to be that.

Not sure about FF, but they do sound a lot like my LO's nappies at that age. If really worried phone your HV.

Clarissimo · 14/01/2009 22:11

pretty normal ime but

at 15 days, sep. with a premmie, you must call a GP with even the slightest worry. ds2 had a sudden bout of very mild diarrhoea at 10 weeks and they took him in just to check overnight.

If he seems listless or his fontanrelle is sunken it needs doing now and you should call either a gp or the ward if you have a helpline- if not call nhs direct.

Congrats on the baby.

This sounds completely normal for a BF baby. They can projectile squirt poop over 2 metres at this age (as I know from personal experience). DS once pooped across the length of his changing mat and almost the entire length of his cot. Quite an impressive trail. DH and I both stood open mouthed in shock for a good 10 seconds before being able to do anything about it! IT will be runny as they are taking all the goodness out of it - there is very little waste product from breast milk.

All sounds right on target to me, so to speak!

All newborns have runny stools. They're not taking in solids, so they won't be hard for ages yet.

I'm surprised you can't remember that from ds1, but I guess 'baby-brain' is fully operational

Sycamoretree · 14/01/2009 22:20

Nobody - just read again that DS is FF. In that case, and because he is premie, I would contact your GP just to be sure.

DD was FF and I don't recall her stools ever being this lose. DS was more of a success of the BF front, hence our shock at how runny the poos were - we had no idea as DD's were never like this (well, maybe the first 5 days whilst she was still BF before my milk did not came in).

Desiderata · 14/01/2009 22:40

But how can a 15 day old babies' poos be hard? They're not taking in solids.

It sounds exactly like my ds, also FF, and it went on for ages. Until he started weaning, in fact.

'Mustard from a squeezy bottle' suggests to me that the consistency for a child of this age is perfectly fine.

Check the fontanelle if you're concerned about dehydration, but honestly, this sounds entirely normal to me.

Sycamoretree · 14/01/2009 22:43

I think DD's were paste-like rather than solid, if that makes sense?

Christ - just realised I am now in deep discussion on the consistency of baby shit.

Is this the new black?

Clarissimo · 14/01/2009 22:44

Desi I am inclined to agree but this is a premmie newborn, surely a phone call is worth it? Chances are if it isnt right it'll just be the AB's but its not worth not asking, iyswim?

Seona1973 · 15/01/2009 13:53

thats what ds's nappies were like too. Are you using formula that contains pre-biotics as they are supposed to keep the stools soft and 'more like a breastfed babies poo'. If it was diarrhea then it would be like water and very smelly and would be more often than once a day.

nobodysfool · 15/01/2009 20:09

Thanks everybody for your advice.
I phoned the HV today and she said there was nothing to worry about and that was totally normal.
