horrid nappy rash that I can't shift! any advice?

My LO is 7 months and has developed a truly awful case of nappy rash in the last week that I cannot shift. She has always been a bit prone to it but usually I can get rid of it with vaseline or canesten. This time I have tried EVERYTHING - vaseline, canesten, bepanthen, sudacrem, Johnson's own nappy cream... I have tried all these things for 24 hours to see if there is any difference, but none of them seem to be doing anything. I am leaving her nappy off for about an hour each day and she has a bath every evening - I don't use any soap on her skin, just baby shampoo on her hair. I am being super-vigilant about changing her nappy regularly.

I think it might be related to teething - she has her 2 bottom teeth already but one of the top ones is coming in and is giving her lots of grief. Also, I am doing BLW and she has recently started to eat food properly - her poos have really changed and bother her much more than before so I am sure that is also having an effect.

Does anyone have any ideas of other things to try? If I were to take her to the pharmacy, would they be able to give me something other than the stuff I have already tried? or should I just take her to the doctor?

have you tried metanium? it really is fab.

Nappy cream wise I swear by Metanium, but if you've tried all those others you perhaps don't want to keep throwing products at the problem.

In my experience teething can seem to cause nappy rash, and it clears up once the tooth is through.

Is t possible that she's reacting to the food she's been eating? Some foods commonly irritate baby skin - tomatoes especially.

Raw beaten egg white. Paste it on, let it dry a little. An old wives tale that actually works

I was also going to suggest Metanium.

It is. It's vile yellow stuff that smells of a chemistry lab. You really only need a teeny tiny bit on the affected area. A tube will last you ages (My eldest is nearly 3 and I'm still on my first tube). It really does work though, and I think it sooths as well as heals because it seems to have an immediate effect on a sore, grumpy child.

i think the eggwhite thing is now advised against, can't remember why.

i loathe metanium, but it does work most often. it could also be a case of thrush, you should google for pictures to see. timodene will work for that, if so.

i also used to find that dd1's nappies were REVOLTING when she was cutting teeth and it was the only time she ever got nappy rash, so that may also be a factor. (although apparently that's another old wives' tale, but it deffo happened to us).

it could be thrush if it isn't clearing up

take her to the doctor. If thrush, something like canesten HC (clotrimazole/hydrocortison) or daktacort (miconazole/HC) might be necessary or it could even be bacterial. My son's nappy rash didn't clear up for weeks; my GP swabbed it and it grew MRSA.

Doctor gave one of mine a mild steroid cream - Timodene - and told me to put on a thin layer of that followed by a barrier cream over the top - Antipeol (not made any more). I then tried Timdoene plus Sudocrem with a later baby and it worked very well. Metanium is pretty good stuff as well.

Rache - MRSA!

Try metanium, rather than egg white. It is magic cream - every new mother should be issued with a tube (I was given some as a present when ds1 was born) although we didn't use it until he was around your little ones age. The other creams are largely soothers and barrier creams, metanium really starts to heal the skin.

Oops sorry! It is twice as good as anything else though! Specially once they start teething and can get awful nappy rash then.

Thanks again all - went to the pharmacy on Thurs and they gave me Canesten HC - applied it on Thurs night and by Fri morning she was almost all better! It truly is magic stuff, although apparently not to be used for more than a week as it has a steroid in it...
Thanks again x

OP says she has tried Canestan - so that should handle thrush. How long did you use it for. With Canestan you should use it for at least 3 days to see an effect - and continue for a couple of weeks after rash has gone to stop it coming back.

The other possibility is a bacterial infection - this will need a GP.

The other option is that is just down to teething. In our house this normally flairs for 24hrs as the tooth is cut and lasts no more than 48hrs as maximum...disappears as quickly as it appeared.
