How old is your ds?

My DS1 had it really bad as a baby. I would have to hold him over the sink everytime I fed him and he lived in bibs. there was a lot of washing.

It really got to me to the point I didn't want to go out of the house.

Dr's told me nothing could be done and they wouldn't worry about it unless he didn't gain weight or started loosing weight. They usually grow out of it around 9 mths.

My DS carried on until 11 mths and it just suddenly stopped.

Didn't bother him a bit, he carried on gaining weight but as I said it really got to me.

he's 22wks. thing is it is bothering him!! he takes a couple of oz then screams the house down. he's only taken 13oz all day. he's not lost any weight but is slowly dropping a centile.

ds had silent reflux...no vomiting but lots of pain

he had gaviscon...useless

GP then put him on ranitidine...ok but not great

eventually got referred to paeds specialist

he was on Omeprazole for about 4 - 5 months

this and weaning really helped him

ask your GP for a referral if he won't prescribe anything else

www.littlerefluxers.co.uk is a good website for advice and support

How did you try and give the Gaviscon yarrow? Are you ff or bf?

SpecialOffer · 14/01/2009 21:03

weaning really helped my ds as well. We weaned him at 17 weeks on the advice of the paed - amazing to find something that worked.

That said, gaviscon powder mixed in his bottle was fine, is that what you are doing?

My ds had bad reflux. He started bring up milk at about 8 weeks (ff), I took him to gp who said it was viral infection but something was telling me that wasn't it, so I carried on going to surgery. Got talking to a friend who had a friend with a reflux baby and she told me about gaviscon, so I went back to gp and they prescribed it and said to keep ds on it for the whole time he was taking milk, we used it for about a week, but I wasn't happy having it as a long term solution so we were referred to a pead (can't spell) at the hospital who put ds on a formula to tresat it. It was Aptimil A.R. and after a few days, ds was less uncomfortable, although he continued to be quite sicky until he weaned, he wasn't so squirmy and didn't seem in pain anymore, he settled alot easier and was generally alot happier

Both my two had reflux, ds1 threw up for england but wasn't bothered by it at all.

Ds2 screamed the place down, lots of back arching, hardly drinking any milk.

Went to docs - gaviscon - didn't work. Referred to paediatrician at Bupa, he didn't like drugs so prescribed a pharmacy only formula called Enfamil AR (anti-reflux) it's a formula that thickens on contact with stomach acid. It has corn or rice starch added to it.

We could use normal teats because the formula didn't thicken in the bottle.

He was 17 weeks when he saw the paed, we had all the formula on prescription, he stopped when he was 14 months. He would have carried on for longer but I couldn't in all conscience carry on having free formula. He never took to cows milk.

We were advised to wean early with starchy foods so mainly potato, it didn't help so we stopped and he weaned normally at around 5 1/2 months.

Are you breastfeeding? Is this why you have to give it neat? I found with the gaviscon that they say mix X amount to X sized feed but I knew there was no way my son would even drink that amount.

He was having 2-3ozs per feed and feeding about 10-12 times a DAY!!!!! I was exhausted.

We mixed the gaviscon into the formula then divided that down over 2 bottles.

Go back to the docs, you will probably be referred to paediatrician. Don't give up, it is hell trying to feed a screaming baby.
