It's not red or sore looking, just flaky. And he has lots of hair so it's not that easy to get to.

TIA

Olive oil. Leave it for a while (an hour) then wash off. Worked with my DS

Amapoleon · 13/01/2009 21:34

I second olive oil.

Habbibu · 13/01/2009 21:35

wait for hair to grow...

mrsgboring · 13/01/2009 21:36

NO NOT olive oil, it actually encourages cradle cap (though it will work for mild cases) A mineral oil or something like sunflower oil is better.

I had a nightmare with DS's. Dentinox (OTC shampoo) almost worked. But the thing that really knocked it on the head was soem prescription shampoo from GP - sorry can't remember name of it.

Jojay · 13/01/2009 21:38

What do you wash the olive oil off with - just water? Do they end up with really greasy hair or do you shampoo it out?

Habbibu - he has loads of hair already - it just looks like awful dandruff

I use grapeseed oil, and occasionally use a tiny bit of Head & Shoulders to wash it off - otherwise I just use ordinary baby shampoo. I rub it on neat to try and get the oil off and then add water, but DS doesn't have that much hair. The H&S really helps, but I'm very wary of using it too often!

dontbitemytoes · 13/01/2009 21:54

dentinox, dentinox, dentinox!! was wonderful stuff and cleared cradle cap in 2 days!!

whomovedmychocolate · 13/01/2009 21:56

Ditto Habbibu - DD still has it at 2 though!

Though she has so much hair (only I know) - also it's a good assault course for the nits

fymandwhenisthisbabycoming · 13/01/2009 21:57

Dentinox!

CatIsSleepy · 13/01/2009 21:58

LOL Habbibu that's what I did too

and even more shamefully, used to pick bits of it off dd's head when i was feeding her

whomovedmychocolate · 13/01/2009 22:05

It's very satisfying picking bits of cradle cap off. Almost (but not quite) as satisfying as using the snot sucker!

Habbibu · 13/01/2009 22:06

You want psoriasis, whomoved. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

LoveMyLapTop · 13/01/2009 22:07

I massaged baby oil int the scalp then combed through with a fine tooth comb before shampooing with cradle cap shampoo

Surfermum · 13/01/2009 22:08

The thing that got rid of it for dd was olive oil, Dentinox and a nit comb.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 13/01/2009 22:09

Someone told me to put vaseline on it overnight- I did it twice and it was completely cured, and has never come back!

PinkFurryStripeyTiger · 13/01/2009 22:29

A friend of mine shaved her DS's head then rubbed the cradle cap off with a soft cloth and I think olive oil soap and water.

Habbibu · 13/01/2009 22:30

"shaved her DS's head" Really? I don't think I could bring myself to do that.

FrannyandZooey · 13/01/2009 22:31

does anyone else just leave it?

i mean, it's only skin

people have stopped me and gone "awww, the poor thing"
what's the problem?

littleboyblue · 13/01/2009 22:33

mw at hospital told me to use extra virgin olive oil and scrape gently with a baby comb, seemed a bit brutal to me so used dentinox, was fantastic. In fact all dentinox products have been great for us.

Habbibu · 13/01/2009 22:33

Yup, Franny. Am pretty sure dd still has it, and she's 2.3. But as I said, I have psoriasis, so am very ok with flaky skin!

Marthasmama · 13/01/2009 22:34

I used eczema cream, not the steroid stuff, diprobase. It is like vaseline. The cradle cap lifted off in big scabby lumps and as DD has loads of black hair it looked hideous. It's gone now though!

PinkFurryStripeyTiger · 13/01/2009 22:43

Yes, shaved it. I know. DD1 had cradle cap and it's only just gone (at nearly 2.5), so maybe she had the right idea. I know in some cultures it's common practice to shave baby's first hair off- maybe this is one practical reason behind the tradition?

littleboyblue · 13/01/2009 22:47

My SIL shaved her ds's head because of creadle cap, they did it for years, until he was at least 2.5

MrsGrouchoMarxMerryHenry · 13/01/2009 22:48

I have a brand new, unopened bottle of dentinox if you want it! Pay nothing but the postage.

UmSami · 13/01/2009 22:49

I waited for ds's hair to grow too, at 18 months he still had cradle cap and lots of hair...used pharmacy grade olive oil, and washed it off with baby shampoo, did the job in 2-3 applications, he's 34 months now and hes had no problems since (touch wood)...do miss pulling 'scales' out from betweem hairs tho'!
