Dd2 (almost 3) has a temp of 39, she didn't eat her dinner so i thought something was up (she's autistic and non-verbal so can't tell me if anything is wrong), i can't get any med's into her as she urges and gags, she's refusing drink so i cant sneak any meds into drink. I have taken her clothes off, opened windows (dh and i are freezing) and now shes led in her bed , she doesn't seem to be in pain but she never makes a fuss.

Im panicking as i have a sickness phobia, im so worried she will be sick even though im not sure whats wrong with her.

I noticed a few days ago that she was cutting a back tooth so im trying to say to myself 'she's just teething' but she doesn't seem to be in pain in her mouth.

mop her down with luke warm water if she gets very hot again

be careful about making it too cold in the house though btw.

prob not much help to you right now, buty you can ask your GP to prescribe paracetamol suppositories if she won't take meds from a spoon/syringe

ok, i will take her temp again soon, shes led next to a window and she's very sleepy. Do i just let her sleep it off?

i think id run a tepid bath and let her sit in there and splash and offer her ice pops.

nickschick · 13/01/2009 19:25

sorry i hope i wasnt tctless i misunderstood she has autism, sorry

Ibuprofen lowers temperature - though may of course mask any pain so if you think there may actually be something wrong this might not be the best thing.

As rubys said, dabbing her with tepid (not cold) water will also help.

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 13/01/2009 19:29

Sorry , just seen she won't take drinks/medicine so suggestion of ibuprofen not much help, sorry.

I would put her to bed, in lighter bedding than normal and keep a window slightly open at least for part of the evening - if it gets really cold later and she seems to have cooled down you could always put another blanket on.

Thats ok, its so hard when she can't tell me whats wrong , the only way i can tell if she's ill is when she doesn't eat or lies still (shes doing both). She's fallen asleep now so can't be in any pain, her temp is still 38.8. I panicked earlier as her eyes were rolling and she looked realy dizzy . Will she be ok to sleep now or should i keep checking her temp.

Sorry i'm so useless

38.8 is on the high side but not alarmingly so. If I was you I'd dab her down, put her to bed in light clothes/bedding, and check again in an hour or so.

Presumably no other symptoms (rash) etc?

Poor little mite - and you, it's alarming enough when they're ill specially when they can't tell you what's wrong.

agree, 38.8 isn't that bad. so just leave her to sleep in something not too warm. it'll prob do her good to get plenty of sleep anyway.

but try and get some fluids into her if she wakes/in the morning.
as someone else said ice pops/lollies are a good idea

Thank you all for your advice, her temp shot up to 40 last night but i let her sleep through it, i didn't sleep as i was keeping an eye on her all night. This morning its back down to 37.6 and she has eaten a bit of toast, she's still realy floppy and refussing to drink (i don't think she trusts me not to put med's in her drink). I think she may be coming down with the flu virus that i have just got over .
Dd1 has also come out in sympathy and refusing to go to school. And i thought today i could relax .
