UV suits and sun cream - please explain

wasn't sure where to put this - anyway, I know I'm being thick but wanted to check to be safe. I'm going on holiday for some winter sun next week, with ds 20 mo. I have UV suits for him which say they give SPF 40+ protection.

Does this mean that I put him in the suit and just put 40+ cream on his hands / wrists / ankles / feet / face and he can then stay in the sun on the same basis as if he had 40+ factor cream on all over?

or do I put cream all over him and then the suit on top? and does this give him any greater protection than just the suit?

if I just put cream all over him and no suit would this be better / worse / the same than using the suit?

Btw, am not planning to make him stay in hot sun for ages, just want to be very sure he doesn't burn at all. He's not had much exposure to strong sun given the last 2 summers in the UK and I haven't had any experience of small children in strong sun before.

yes, suit provides same level of cover, just apply (and regularly reapply) cream to exposed bits

Last summer we put my DS (then about 12 months) in a UV suit and hat and used cream on his exposed bits only, worked fine other than that he turned out to be allergic to every baby suncream I could get my hands on!! So by the end of the summer it was UV suit and shade only, although the furthest we got was the Channel Islands, not exactly intense sun
