My dd1's been diagnosed with brittle asthma

My dd1 is 4.7 and has asthma. Despite being nebulised regularly and massive doses of medication she's been in and out of hospital for about a year now - I'm talking once a month at least. She had her first real near-fatal attack in early Oct and was ventilated when nothing seemed to help her.

We got through most of December without hospitalization, but Friday night things deteriorated again and she's now in hospital.

She is currently on oral steriods, IV drips, and continuous nebulised B2 agonists with ipratropium bromide. We're currently thinking of more things that can be done as she's not responding.

Doctors have said today - took them bloody long enough - that she has brittle asthma

So basically, I would really like to hear your experiences and more info about brittke asthma... perhaps some questions I could ask... and if there's anything I can do to help her? other than the obvious? Poor thing just wants to lie on a cold floor, but they won't let her .

Sorry this is a bit rambley, I'm exhausted and stressed and my head is spinning, just about to go back to the hosp and take over from dh... dreading it Can't stand seeing her crying cause she can't breathe and asking me to make it better when everything I do is wrong

Hi, sorry about your dd Hope things start to improve soon.
My ds was diagnosed with brittle asthma last year he has just turned 4
There is not really much I can tell you as we are still learning everyday.
Ds is under a fab consultant at hospital and we see him every 6 weeks.
Ds is on high doses of medication to try and keep the condition under control but as you may already be aware they go down hill so quick
All I can say is that ds is pretty well inbetween attacks but we don't tend to get any warning we have had a check up in the afternoon then been rushed to hospital in the evening.
I've asked the consultant about peak flow but he din't think it would help things as when he go's its quick.
I'm sorry if thats not much help just wanted to let you know that you are not on your own.

Both my kids are brittle asthmatics, it's really scary stuff isn't it?

Has Montelukast been suggested? It helped DD no end, though it hasn't helped DS at all. My two are now both late teens, DS's asthma is under much better control but DD has just had a bad year and gone back onto Montelukast after several well years.
