Dd 3.4 is not well, I gave her 10mls of calpol before she went up to bed, dh didn't realise and I stupidly didn't shout up to him. We've just realised that dh also gave her 10ml of medised upstairs.

What do we do? Anyone know if this is really serious? I know guidelines are only guidelines and often there is some leway.

She is fine atm btw, we have stirred her and got her to talk to us.

Does it have paracetamol in it?

call nhs direct 0845 46 47. It should be fine, but they will advise you of anything to look out for.

CharCharGabor · 06/01/2009 21:19

Definitely call nhs direct

edam · 06/01/2009 21:23

I'm sure she'll be fine but yes, do check with NHS D and don't make a habit of it! It's very very common for people to make mistakes like this. Not advisable, but you aren't alone.

DaisyMooSteiner · 06/01/2009 21:25

If it reassures you, ds2 and dd fed each other half a bottle of Calopol when the were 3 yo and 2 yo respectively. We took them to A&E but they said that even if they'd had half a bottle each it wouldn't do them any harm Still worth checking with NHS Direct, but don't panic!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 06/01/2009 21:27

Def check with NHS direct as they both contain paracetamol, but when my ds1 had high temps which we were struggling to control, the Dr worked out doses of calpol and ibuprofen for him based on his weight and they were way more than the bottle label doses so I'm sure she'll be fine

Blu · 06/01/2009 21:30

There are several different strengths of Calpol - which was it?

Will be ok, anyway - just don't give more in 24 hr period.

MmeJaffaB · 06/01/2009 21:35

Can't ring NHS direct, not in the UK!

Have just woken her again and had a little chat with her. She probably thinks I'm mad asking her what her name is and can she count to 3 while she's half asleep. She seems ok, a little sleepy but she was asleep, IYSWIM

I'm tempted to google it but I might freak. 4hrs is it? She'll be fine after 4 hrs, will have worked through her system by then won't it?

Edam, we won't be doing it again in a hurry.

thanks for the reassurances, I'm not normally a panicker, don't know whats wrong with me.

Blu the Calpol says 2.4 percent on it, it's the French one but I think it's the same.

Of course the 4-6hr rule will not be right, doh
Her temp has come down though, nervous

fishie · 06/01/2009 21:41

don't worry, guidelines are what you say but no more para, ibuprofen instead they can be taken together.

paracetamol overdose affects liver i believe, so do leave her alone to sleep it won't make her drowsy.

fishie · 06/01/2009 21:43

sorry that was very badly worded.

ds had an op at 9m and was prescribed (and given) much more paracetamol than your dd has had so really do not worry. but the body can only deal with so much of it within a given time so give it a rest.

callmeovercautious · 06/01/2009 21:46

Has she had some earlier in the day?
Personally I don't think I would be too worried if that is all she has had recently.

Let her sleep

Sawyer64 · 06/01/2009 21:52

If it helps the Triage Nurse this morning in A&E calculated the dosage my DS could have of Calpol.
......He times'ed 15 by his weight in Kg.
ie. 15 x 34 (kg) = 510 mg Paracetamol (Calpol)

MmeJaffaB · 06/01/2009 21:52

No that was the only lot today, I won't give her anymore for a good 8 hrs and not at all obviously if she doesn't need it.

Thanks all

DH and I did exactly this when he was little as well. We panicked, called NHS direct and the GP on call service. Both assured us that it wasn't a huge deal he would be fine and just to miss out the next dose.

moosemama · 06/01/2009 22:11

Oh god, preggy brain, should have said:

'DH and I did exactly this when DS2 was little.'

God I hate being post term, my brain has turned completely to mush!

MmeJaffaB · 06/01/2009 22:24

Not long now then moosemama, it doesn't come back btw, the brain!

See, from what I've done tonight, that's after 3 dc's, we are contemplating a 4th, not sure if I have enough cells left though.

OP posts:
moosemama · 06/01/2009 22:38

MmeJaffaB Ah you see, this one is DC3/DD1, that's why there wasn't much brain left to mush! (I did the calpol thing to DS2, lord only knows what this poor little mite will have to contend with!)

Definitely won't be a DC4, never, never, never again will I go through another pregnancy like this one! (Said that last time by the way!)

edam · 06/01/2009 22:45

Moosemama - I should have put a after don't make a habit of it, didn't mean to imply you would! (If it makes you feel any better, I once turned round to find baby ds eating rat poison... in my defence I had no bloody idea we HAD any rat poison and would have wrung dh's neck if only my hands were big enough.)

moosemama · 06/01/2009 22:56

No offence taken edam.

Was exactly the same situation as MmeJaffaB, I gave DS some calpol when I put him to bed and neglected to tell DH, so he assumed I hadn't done it and being a helpful sort of chap, gave him some as well. Not at all like us to be that uncommunicative, but after several nights in a row with 2 sick children and no sleep slip ups can happen to anyone. We now have an arrangement where one of us is responsible for the calpol/medication on any given night. Scared the life out of ourselves at the time.

MmeJaffaB · 06/01/2009 23:08

tbh, I'm surprised she didn't tell Daddy she'd just had some but sadly she flippin like that taste and usually wants more so probably the reason she didn't complain about it.

A friend of a friend has worked it out on the charts, as she hasn't had any other doses before tonight she should be fine.
