ds2 is 6 weeks and since hes been born hes been very stuffy in his nose and snoring and snorting. i was told just newborn mucus. this went on and day before xmas eve he couldnt breath. next day went to gp who said chest and lungs clear and he was just catarrh and to keep doing what we were(steaming, nose drops etc) we bought an air humidifier aswell. anyway yesterday he was struggling to breath again so went to doc abd he said chest and lungs still fine and that the problem is from his neck upwards and that he may have something wrong with his layrinx or oesophogus. We are seeing paediatgrician tomorrow for his silent reflux and doc said i need to talk to her as it needs looking into.

bit worried now, has anyone any experience of this and any idea what could be wrong?

tia

elibean, trying to do research on what could cause these other probs with ds, with the odd noise with floppy laryinxcan it only be when they breath in? if ds is doing it breathing out does that mean i can rule it out?

On a positive note My ds is now 11 months and is fine

He had similar problems from birth, started off in special care for a week with breathing problems but really struggled with his breathing when he was sent home.
Kept taking him to doctors for answers as to why he was so noisy breathing and snoring when asleep. He used to make choking noises and seemed really distressed not to mention how frightening we found it. I felt they didnt believe me or take me seriously so we videod it. The gp couldnt find anything wrong with his lungs and said it was his upper respiratory that was the problem. He told us it sounded worse than it was and that he would grow out of it.
Gp checked him for cystic fibrosis as I was so worried at how congested he sounded. But test were negative.
He also had reflux which was helped by all the suggestions previously mentioned but we were prescribed Cow & Gate carobel instant thickener. This was brilliant and really helped. Might be worth suggesting to your gp.

Yes it was stressful, frustrating and tiring but yes as the gp suggested he did grow out of it. Thankfully.
I pray it is the same for your little ones.

Sorry, I was talking to you mad4. If you still BF at all then it would need to be your diet too, but if he's on goat's milk formula he should be ok. why goat's milk? DD was still sensitive to it (the whole milk, after 1 year old), but was ok with Pepti formula which is hydrolysed dairy-based. I was so desperate I would have tried anything. We found she was very gluten sensitive too (through breast milk) but that cause gastro symptoms and not congestion. The dairy was definitely the congestion problem. Even today, she had pancakes with butter at the childminder and she had gooey blobs in her eyes this evening.

he couldnt even have the hydrolysed formulas as he is that sensitive to it, exaclty the same with ds1 (who sadly was given an inhaler yesterday for asthma at 2.6 )

mad4, I'm not 100% sure, but with dd its on the in breath that the classic 'squeak' sound happens. I remember a GP, and an ENT doctor, mentioning that asthma would be on the out breath...

I'm sorry about your ds1, I've used asthma inhalers as per GP suggestion with dd2 since about 12 months old, but they've never really made any difference so I think they just misdiagnosed her. dd1 has had one since about 3.5 yrs old, but only has to use the preventer during winter colds.

It does sound as though there could be an asthma component for your ds2, if his brother has it so young?? Do try recording/videoing him when asleep, if I were a doctor I'd find that really helpful...

Daddynet, if yo'ure still here, do check out Mad4's other thread 'experts on breathing problems in small babies' (from memory!) several posters there with LOs with laryngomalacia.

Or, you could start a thread with laryngomalacia in the title line and see if there are others with tips, or whose LOs had surgery early on?

thanks for the info mad4. I did not think about the car seat as we already have one from our other 2 so we can see how he gets on with it.

I am going to buy the cot wedges and use the trowels as side wedges - great tip there.

I will take a look at the air purifier / humidifier as well - did you have this in his bedroom or in the lounge?

Thanks

Keith

elibean,

thanks for the tips, what is CAT???

I think I will start another thread from scratch, can you mad4 cut and paste some of the posts and we can make it an informational post.

It will also be good to see what trends people had.

Thanks

Keith

daddynet, we have a larger one(about 1 foot square) that we have in front room as one of us had been sleeping in there with ds2 at nights and i have recently bought a little tiny one from boots that was £30 but you have to make sure it is ok for the room size. it will say on the side of the packet what square meter it will cover.

elibean, i dont think this is asthma unless he has some sort of 'air' allergy. He was born in birth center and was like this since he literally was put in the crib. When i put him down in the day in his cot he always wakes up after half an hour because he is snorting which means he only sleeps half hour every 4 hours or so... there has to be SOMETHING that causes this..... best stop posting as i feel a rant coming on

Ah, sorry, mad4, did'nt see you'd put link here too, ignore my post on other thread!

DaddyNet, CAT means 'communicate with another talker' or something similar - basically means you can email me via Mumsnet, if you are set up for CAT yourself. There is info on it at the top of the page on the MN Toolbar - I'm hopeless with the technical stuff, but if you need more explanation I bet someone else can do a good job of guiding you with it.

We have the humidifier about three feet from dd's bed, and when she's been especially bad (ie when she's had a cold) we've aimed it right at her for periods of time till she's less bunged up - otherwise just into the room at large. But wherever your ds is spending most time, I would think.

Do start a fresh thread, we'll post and/or bump it for you
