Bad night of croup seems inevitable, have I thought of everything?

DS is 16 months, and has had croup a couple of times last winter, and was hospitalised once. Last night wasn't great, with wheezy breathing and a temperature, but we got by. But he's had a barking cough for most of the day, so I'm trying to prepare myself for a bad night. So far I have:

  • put the humidifier on in his room, having had the window open for the afternoon (now closed) so the humidifier doesn't make the room too warm
  • propped up the cot at one end
  • hot water on so we can steam the bathroom (have already tried this this afternoon and didn't seem to help much)
  • calpol and calprofen at the ready, will give him calpol when he goes to bed and see how we go
  • pushchair upstairs in case he sleeps better in a more propped up position
  • thermarest, pillow and duvet on his floor in case we want to sleep with him (he will not sleep in our bed)
  • out of hours doctors number at the ready (and I know where A&E is..)

Have I missed anything?

I would turn the heating off in the house - DD was always much better when her room was cool (and you're right, the steamer always warmed her room). It will also help if the bathroom IS cool as it will steam up much easier, if neccessary.

You seem to have it covered though - have you got the humidifer going already?

Yep, the humidifier is on already - it works much better in a cold room, it would appear!

I guess we do need to turn off the heating - we'll have to spend most of the day upstairs tomorrow if we do, the downstairs of our house is fricking cold and takes forever to warm up. Would be worth it though if it helps.

It is going to be a cold night - can you turn the radiator off in his room rather than freeze your ass off all night?!?

His room can get warm even with the radiator off. I think we need to turn down the thermostat for the rest of the house rather than have it off completely and see how it goes. Thanks!!
