toddler with itchy "front bottom" - any ideas?

DD(17m) has been itchy under her nappy for about ten days - I've tried sudacrem and aveeno but neither makes any difference. We are using the same chlorine free nappies we've always used. She's not sore, but is trying to scratch regularly. I don't think its eczema as it isn't dotty at all. It might be very slightly raised, pink and blotchy. Think I'll try to see a GP tomorrow but anyone have any ideas?

threadworms? thrush?

treacletart · 02/01/2009 19:22

Hadn't thought of those - its very external though. Guess "Pudenda" would be a more technical term than front bottom - wouldn't thrush or worms be more internal?

no, thrush can be on the outside too - will look reddy/pink and a bit raised. Canesten will be fine for that.

Threadworms are internal, yes, but can move forwards in girls....

DD was like that when she had threadworms, they can creep into both the vagina and the bladder. They cause localised irritation or at least their eggs do. But it's easily treated with drugs and a specific hygiene routine.

oooh I think I've got some Canestan upstairs. It's safe to give it a try isn't it?

ooooh no not worms! poor little mite! I hope it's not that. Would I not be able to see worms in her bottom/poo too?

You should be able to see worms and I thought it was unlikely nappy wearers could get them as you have to be able to 'reach' your areas in the night to reinfect.....

scorpio1 · 02/01/2009 19:36

threadworms are easy to get in nappy wearers - eggs can get everywhere! You would see worms in her poo normally.

Though your description really sounds like thrush to me.

My 20 month old dd has been 'scratching' at her 'itchy' front bottom for a couple of months now. After trying every cream under the sun,we took her to the GP to see if they could figure out what the problem was.

After getting no joy there, the penny dropped about what was going on- she's found her clitoris and is enjoying having a fiddle at every chance she can get (i.e. every time her nappy is off). Maybe your dd has found hers too?

Sounds like thrush to me!

treacletart · 03/01/2009 10:59

tried some canesten on her last night and it does seem a little calmer this morning - thanks girls

Oh good - glad she's a bit better!

treacletart · 05/01/2009 10:58

Thanks everyone - all clear this morning!

It's not as easy to see threadworms as you think - I never saw one of DDs, but I know for definite that she had it.
