asthma/wheeze Mums...need opinions

DS (2.2) has just gotten over his first ever cold/virus without any other treatment! This really is a fab step forward for us and I am so pleased for him.
I know the magic age when kids can start to grow out of their problems, if lucky enough is around 2 so fits.
The only niggle is 3 weeks ago he got unwell, needing oral steroids and antibiotics etc and doc doubled his brown inhaler dose.
Have you had a child grow out of viral wheeze/asthma issues and if so how...was it gradual.
I am seriously not wanting to get ahead of myself. He is booked in on 13th for tonsils and adenoids removing and I dont know if I should perhaps postpone and see how he goes or if I am being totally unrealistic in thinking one normal cold could be a turing point for him.

i think it would be worth getting a second opinion about the tonsils. As far as i know, recent medical opinion suggests that tonsils removal is not of as much benefit as it used to be thought. There may be a s pecial reason in your ds's case but a second opinion can't hurt. I would say a big op may set his immune system back a bit. I had bad asthma but not that young, i git it around the age of 8, it lasted into my twenties but has now in my thirties pretty much gone.

There are some things that vastly improved my asthma - no carpets, no pets, a dehumidifier [ a good one with an air filter] and dustmite allergy covers on mattress, duvet and pillows. sea air too! I would seriously suggest getting the dehumidifier as a start.

Just to clarify his tonsils and adenoids are being removed due to sleep apnea. Its all kind of linked together as his paeds feel poor sleep and the obstruction make his asthma symptoms worse. I'm sure this is the case but dont really know if the sleep apnea thing would concern me as much if it wasnt coupled with the chest problems. I know I am subconciously looking for reasons to not have the op. I see many of these ops and have seens for too many patients have to come back to theatre etc.....worrying
But I can see the benefit in removing them now at his age, if they definately do need removing.
DS 's athma is triggered by viral infections it seems . Allergy screening was negative for dust mite, pollen, cat hair etc.

are those allergy screenings definitely accurate? are they pin prick tests? I mean i can understand how asthma can be aggravated by viruses, but why is it there in the first place?
But for sleep apnea i can understand why tonsil/adenoid removal necessary. You could still ask for a second opnion to make you feel sure though.

lubblyjubblies · 02/01/2009 12:48

It wasnt pinprick testing, it is my understanding that they aren't accurate on infants. He had blood samples and a bronchial lavage done. His problems stem from bronchiolitis and pneumonia as a small baby.
DH has hayfever though, and one of DD's has excema so proper asthma may well be on the cards for him anyway.

My DS1 is 2.1 and takes preventer inhalers daily. We got all excited when he had a cold a few weeks ago and managed on just a few extra puffs of the blue puffer, and for the first time didn't need the oral steroids or a nebuliser.

Unfortunately a week or two later he was bad and needed the oral steriods again, though not the nebuliser.

He's since had another cold (they're pretty much back to back at the moment aren't they?!) and he coped again with just the blue puffer, though lots of it (6 puffs hourly all afternoon and evening)

We're cautiously optimistic that things are slowly improving, but I think in DS's case, it's going to be a while before he's off medication all together.

Don't know anything about tonsils / adenoids though - it's not something that's been suggested to us.

Jojay · 02/01/2009 12:51

And DS's asthma is also triggered by viruses, not allergies, too.

lubblyjubblies · 02/01/2009 13:03

Sound like similar circumstances Jojay. It is nice to have a glimmer of hope of improvement though. DS has been so very poorly, so often, poor mite. Colds have been back to back here too, with the odd vomming bug thrown in for good measure!
You would not believe how proud I feel of him, getting over a cold alone

oh yes that makes sense. Sorry if not much help.
