I got a letter from ENT for my DS on 22 Jan to have his tonsils taken out I was looking forward to this operation for I m hoping it will help him to sleep, eat an get less ill but now feel a bit uptight for him anyway what I cant understand is this letter his assessment and a later date will be the operation or will both be on the same day it doesnt say which one. Whats the normal procedure?

My DS is due to have his adenoids and grommets done on the 20th Jan, we have a pre assessment appointment on the 9th, for redo hearing test, bloodtest etc.
If it is not clear on your letter I would ring tbh

I totally understand the anxiety, you know it will be beneficial for them, but still feel slightly uneasy, how old is your ds, My ds will be 3 in march so still seems so little for an op.

Thanks I phoned hospital the secretary of consultant was off the number she gave didn,t know passed me on to 3 different places the last place was ENT department they just said wait for secretary so have to wait till monday. DS will have his tonsils and adenoids taken he is 3.5 and has cerebral palsy so I suppose that why I feel a bit on edge as well

I think tbh honest it is the surgery that makes you tetchey, its such a big thig for little ones, whether they have other problems or not. Am anxious mainly as do not know if ds has inherited my wierdy tendaency to bleed and he has asthma.
Hope all goes ok for you and ds

dd2 is having tonsils and adenoids out on 13th Jan, and I am getting jumpy too (in spite of dreadful sleep apnoea, not eating enough, etc....and part of me can't wait and is terrified she will catch a bug and get delayed).

We got the assessment letter later than the operation letter - once we'd phoned to confirm the op booking, we got the pre-op letter a week or so later, and its 5 days before the op itself.

She's just 2, and has airway issues in the form of laryngomalacia - hence needs a night in HDU after op, as precaution. I hate the whole thing, but do see it needs doing...and have had loads of excellent tips here, and on a thread in the General Health section (title something to do with severe sleep apnoea) if you want to come and look. I'd do a link, but am rubbish

Riven I bet you did though, do the right thing. I have similar thoughts at 3am, but know, in the light of day (and the sound of dd's troubled breathing) its the right thing, if there is such a thing of course.

Its not so much the surgery that scares me as the thought of dd being in pain/scared/confused, of her waking and puking blood and being in pain, of how I'm going to go for a pee and leave her for 2 minutes in the process.....you know, all that stuff

But I'm trying to trust the pre-op appointment will help us both!

How is your dd now?
