Help!!!!! 2 yr old wont take calpol or ibuprofen and his temp is so high he's had a seizure!!!!!

welshmoomin · 02/01/2009 10:02

My 2 yr old had febrile convulsion on NYE. Exteremely scary but not dangerous apparently. We've been told to administer calpol and ibuprofen at regular intervals to keep his temp down. Trouble is, he's just decided he doesn't like it - BIG TIME! Terrified he's going to have another seizure.

Does anyone have any tips on how we can get him to take it (especially at night when we can't disguise it in food/drink etc).

Thanks everyone

When my dd was in this state (not refusing but unable to keep it down) our GP prescribed paracetemol suppositories - could you ring your practise and ask for a prescription? I don't think you can get them over the counter.

AtheneNoctua · 02/01/2009 10:09

I had this problem with DD (though thankfully neve experienced the seizure -- poor you) I got paracetemol to stick up her bum. She didn't like this much either but she couldn't stop me.

I don't know if you can get Ibuprofen in the same form. But its probably worth asking the GP.

yawningmonster · 02/01/2009 10:09

this will sound harsh but with ds we had and still have to hold him down firmly, squirt in medicine with syringe and blow on his mouth to initiate the swallow reflex. It is awful to do but nothing else worked/works for ds and at times he has to have medicine.

nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 02/01/2009 10:10

when my toddler has a strop and refuses it i leave the syringe near him and often he will do it himself - failing that i put his head between my knees laid on the floor - tickle him and shoot it in - a bit forced i know but for his own sake....

MrsHappy · 02/01/2009 10:13

Just put it in a little bit of full-sugar ribena if he will take it like that, even at night. It will only be for a day or two and you can give his teeth an extra good clean in the morning!

welshmoomin · 02/01/2009 10:30

This is the first time I've used this site and it's amazing. Your tips are brilliant and some have made me laugh out loud (need a good laugh after last couple of days). Will definitely give them all a go.

Doc said regular intervals for three days and from then on just monitor and give according to temp.

Happy new year to you all and thanks again. Hope I can help you out some time too.

Get your GP to give you a scrip for paracetamol suppositories, you can buy them OTC but they are £15 +!

I have DC that vomit when temp gets high, so any meds down the hatch come staright back up.

I always keep supositories in the cupboard now.

welshmoomin · 02/01/2009 10:35

Great idea, at least he can't spit it back out at me from that end (well, hopefully not).

I'm afraid I resort to the pinning down and forcing down medicine

I have chocolate buttons to hand IMMEDIATELY afterwards which means that a full-on therapy-inducing hysterical session doesn't start so it is OH MY GOD MUMMY IS PINNING ME DOWN ON GOD IT'S TERRIBLE ON NO THE GHASTLY MEDICINE OOH! CADBURY'S BUTTONS MMMMM!

I explain what I'm doing and give the choice of mummy-pinning-you-down or taking it nicely - either way buttons happens straight afterwards

good luck

JeanieG · 02/01/2009 10:41

I also resort to the pinning down and forcing medicine down camp.

I have an emergency back up supply of suppositories if the medicine route doesn't work.

belgo · 02/01/2009 10:45

Use paracetamol suppositories. They are very quick and easy to use. My dd2 had a febrile convulsion at age 17 months and I used a suppository to get her temperature down, and by the time the ambulance arrived her temperature had come down from over 40 to 38.5°C and she was regaining conciousness. It's scarey isn't it?

morningpaper · 02/01/2009 10:47

I did try suppositories - the first one was fine but then she got wise and I felt much worse struggling with THAT end than with the head end...

welshmoomin · 02/01/2009 10:48

MY GOD! just tried the chocolate bribery and it worked!!!! why didn't i think of that.

Will also try to get suppositories for night time attacks. Will let you know how it goes.

thank you so much.

I have had the same problem with my DD and I added the calpol to yogurt, she ate it right up and didn't taste it

morningpaper · 02/01/2009 10:49

hooray!

IAmTheNewQueenOfMN · 02/01/2009 10:52

In this case where he must have it then you can try every sort of bribery you can think of
I have resorted to things I didn't think I would say before

when gecko was so hot you could fry eggs on her and she just would not take the meds, just before I decided on the pinning down option, I tried one more thing

I sat next to her saying I was having sweety stuff and yummed and took some of the medicine and then when she was interested in the 'sweety stuff' I said it was mummy's and said 'peeezz' so I gave her some

she took it no bother since then as long as I call it sweety stuff , she is 22 months

not really keen on it tbh but it works and she had to have it

but if all else fails pin down, administer meds and then copious amounts of chocolate

MrsMerryHenry · 02/01/2009 10:53

Use a syringe!

IAmTheNewQueenOfMN · 02/01/2009 10:53

ooops bit late with my long post

So glad you managed it

welshmoomin · 02/01/2009 10:54

Hi Belgo,

Too right it's scary. Will keep an extra supply of stain remover for said underpants if it should ever happen again!!!!

Still getting over it to tell you the truth, thought he was a goner when he went lifeless and turned blue. Didn't know that happened during a seizure. You live and learn though and we're just so grateful he's ok. Did your dd2 ever have another one?

OP posts:
belgo · 02/01/2009 11:00

no my dd2 never had another one fortunately, but my other dd1 has had seizures and I have plenty of grey hair to show for it!

welshmoomin · 02/01/2009 11:18

Oh no! We have a ds2 who is 4 mths old so best keep my eye on him too. What a nightmare. Will get some hair dye at the ready as well then.
