DD1 (7) has been complaining of a pain in her neck& ear for days, when i checked today there is a huge sore which looks like an ulcer about 2cms wide. Can you get mouth ulcers that far back (practically on tonsils) and if it is what can i do to help ease it. I have given her some calpol but she says it still hurts.
TIA

I would take her to the doctor's, that sounds very painful, and there could be an infection.

I will be making an appointment 1st thing in the morning for her and dd4 who is also unwell
Just wondered if anyone has any tips for her tonight, after waiting 4 hours yesterday for an emergency doctor to ring back about dd4, i dont fancy trying them again

my sil had an abcess on her tonsils last year, it got so big really quickly it obstructed her breathing and she was rushed to hosp for an emergancy op to drain it

She seems fine in her self, no temp etc and has only sporadically complained of pain. There was no ulcer yesterday as i checked, will try getting her to gargle with salt water but not sure if she will be able to.
I wonder if some bonjela on a cotton bud would work??

Is it white?
With tonsilitis you get white pus covering the tonsil area and it could look like an ulcer I think.
Best to go to the Drs I'd say.
If it is tonsilitis she'll need antibiotics.

dd had this on xmas day a few years back - she was v. ill, couldnt talk or eat - antibiotics did the trick

Yes it is white with red inflamed edges. Will def get her in the doctors, we live literally next door to the surgery so wont have far to take them!

If its an ulcer, its probably viral - v v painful, am sorry your dd has one. I have had the experience of having several (20+) when immune-suppressed years ago, and it was probably the worst pain I've ever experienced.

The best thing for the pain, for me, especially before meals, was to gargle with aspirin and then spit it out...but 7 may well be too young to do that??

Anti-inflammatories like Nurofen may help, I was given Voltarol and codeine, but I was an extreme case I suppose! Would still check it out in case its bacterial and needs ABs though.

Hope she's better soon, if its an ulcer they usually peak on day 5 then get better suddenly and fast.

I once had calcium deposits stuck on my tonsil! This was white, and very uncomfortable, but violent gargling dislodged it eventually.
