My three year old was poorly the day before Xmas eve, was sick and had a temperature.
Xmas eve took her to the docs as she was complaining of a very sore neck, they suspected tonsillitis but said they wouldn't give anti biotics because no white coating yet, but her glands were very enlarged. Told us to use a paracetomol type medicine as well as ibrupofen, both prescribed, so gave to dd as needed.
Today she has been terribly upset, has had a temp, has slept most of the day. HAsn't eaten anything, I've been forcing drink down her where possible. She still says her neck hurts (I think its her throat / glands) but what is worrying me is that she has not done a wee since this morning.
She's asleep now, got her nappy on and no wee yet.
How worried should I be about that? I've been getting her to drink as much as possible but it has been difficult.

Oh Elf how stressy for you. I have just poseted as DD had a temp of 104 for quite a while and have struggled to bring it down. I did what you did too with the stripping off and flannel etc and she is now cooling off. I have just given paracetomol, had given nurofen at 7pm so will wake her at 3am for more medicine.

I did not know a child's temp was higer at night? That would explain the very high temps. Why don't they tell you that sort of thing at baby lessons?

Good luck, I hope that your DD is well very soon. xxx

hope she feels better soon.

I dont know how true that is re temps, she said that an adults temp typically falls at night, whereas a child gets hotter so temp is always higher at night. But it seems to make sense!
Have just given a dose of paracetamol, not sure whether to wake at three or not. No doubt she will wake me at some point during the night anyway.
Shes done another wee and just had more juice.
Temp seems to have gone down, but have got the window open slightly which is cooling the room, and have had the sheets off her.

Hope all goes well tonight

the thing is someone called it scarlet fever and someone else called it scarletina
when ds2 had it - i have no idea really but thought that they were different things... apparently not.
Tonsilitis type symptoms, temp and rash are the big things apparently.

weWITCHyouaGigglechristmas · 26/12/2008 00:31

take a look here
seems pretty good description to me

the NHS version which mentions that it is best treated with antibiotics. Which might mean that you need to get on to sorting it.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 26/12/2008 00:37

her poor neck is swollen up so badly!
I think the incubation period from that link would put her back at the childminders house - I wonder if any of the other kids have been poorly (she hasn't been since Fri, I've been off work this week).
Poor mite.

nsh direct mentioned anti biotics, said if her tongue went all coated then we were to ring back up to get a doc sent around for anti biotics.

We're supposed to be going to a party at fil house on sat, there will be other children there; I guess she cant go?

Ds has has scarlet fever, he had a really high fever for a couple of days, his tongue was pink for all of three minutes, he had a sore throat and then developed a very light pink rash on his thighs. I took him to the GP because I hadn't seen the rash before and he was given 10 days of antibiotics. Scarlet fever left untreated can make the skin peel and can turn into rheumatic fever which has the potential to do all sorts of nasty things. It's only infectious for a few days as far as I am aware. I had to keep ds indoors and away from others. It's just strep throat.
