ds2 has silent reflux. is on neocate which is better for him. Have given ranitidine since sunday night but no improvment on that. when i saw paed last mon she said if it didnt work hed have to have tube down his throat for 24 hours to test the level of acid but that we could take him in after they'd inserted it.

this bothers me hughley. ds1 had worse reflux and didnt have this done, was put on diff meds.

anyway how on earth can you still feed them with a tube inside mouth and how are they supposed to suck a dummy??? this will be hell. and surely its going to really hurt! i had a gastroscopy done once and that was just a few mins and was worse thing ever.

please reassure me someone?? what happens??

how old is your ds2? my dd had this procedure done last year when she was just over 4 months old. The tube was inserted in her nose and went down her throat. From what I remember there are 2 'probes' at the end of the tube, one inside the stomach (I think) and one just outside in the osophegus (sp)

my dd was having a GA for something else so they took the opportunity to put the tube down her throat then. I know from when she had previously been in a SBCU she found the whole thing a bit traumatic so you may well find this bit a bit tough.

But once the tube is down, you ds should be absolutely fine. Depending on how old he is he may want to pull at the tube that will be plastered to his cheek so just watch out for wandering hands. He will be able to drink normally and suck a dummy so don't worry about that.

You will be asked to keep a timesheet of the times when he was feeding and when he was upright or laying down so that they can tie this up with the readings from the probes. Taking the tube out at the end should be straightforward.

From my experience, it will probably be worse for you than for him and he should bounce back from the whole thing pretty quickly. Hope that helps

Not my DC but I have had this done a few years ago. It was uncomfortable rather than painful having it put in and taken out and I found I was a bit squeamish about it but it was ok.

Once it was in it felt weird to eat and drink, they wanted me to eat and drink normally for the test but actually I didn't want to eat much and had to eat slowly.

Hope the ranitidine works before then though, I'm not sure how long it was before DD's worked but it really did, she has just come off it after a year and a half and (touch wood)is ok now.

thanks for responding. He is 5 weeks old. these last few days hes got an awful cough and constantly 'nasal' widthout any snot. he been like this since birth and today took him to gp today as worried about infections etc but gp said it was newborn 'gunk. That it seems to be getting worse as he apparantly is clearing it out. Dont understand that though. Wondering if the tube thing could show anything like that up?
