DD is 7.11, she has severe eczema.
She has had it since birth and it has progressively got worse and took on many different forms.
We have had a billion different creams, treatments and she is under Alder Hey.
SHe has had relaxation, meditation help etc
But no matter what, she just DOESNT sleep. SHe acts very hyperactive during the day, she cant concentrate, she has not progressed much in school recently and actually seems to be forgetting lots that she knew last year. She is irritable, tearful and can never be bothered to do anything and is constantly saying she feels ill.
Im 100% sure it is ALL down to lack of sleep, she can settle down ok but she spends about 80% of her time in bed, scratching, moaning, wriggling, wimpering and its driving me nuts so I am worried sick what its doing to her. This has been ongoing all of her life. no one has ever been able to share a bed with her or a room for that matter, its just awful.
I dont want phenergan or anything similar as we have tried it and it didnt stop her from waking up and it made her worse the next day. I want something that will calm her and settle her for a few weeks, make her comfortable so that hopefully the cycle can be broken. PLease dont think im looking for a 'quick fix' by using meds or whatever, its just that we have tried most other things.
PLease please help, i have the dr phoning me soon and dont want to be fobbed off with piriton again.
Help!

i fully sympathise with you..my son now 15 months has eczema but thankfully not severe..but enough to keep him awake at night through itching and although hes almose out of ezcema[depending on what he eats] its fromed a cycle i think in that he cant sleep properly now..weve been given hydroxyzine[alternative to phernegan] to use for two weeks for him to get used to sleeping htrough and it did help but we dont use it anymore..i dont want too many drugs in him ! but it did elp until we have a relapse though..i know what you mean about the hyperactivity!!! we found elecon cream REALLY helped..have you been prescribed that one yet? I can thelp much but just wanted to give you a cyber hug and say been there and still there!!! plus we dont get the sleep too!!! have you tried homeopathy..it helped my son too..

Nixz · 22/12/2008 10:49

we have had EVERY emmolient, pimcecrmilos (sp?) and steroids (betnovate etc)

My theory is that from a very early age, she realised that scratching 'felt nice' so whenever she is in a situation where she is uncomfortable, her brain tells her to scratch so she feels good!
Almost like learnt behaviour or a coping mechanism.
I cant describe how bad her sleep pattern is. Im guessing she gets about 30 minutes every couple of hours.
Ive woke this morning (i was lying in bed at 1am this morning, listening to her moan and groan and scratch and kick) and her face is swollen, her eyes are puffed up and her face and neck look lke red leather... im really at my wits end...

i had this with 2.5 yr old. i found a cream called relief which is compltely natural, made from manuka honey etc and it cleared his skin within 2 days. he also hada strong anti histamine that made him sleep. have you tried the special pjs? lined with silver r something healing like that. have seen them online. not sure if they do them thatbig, try googling. have you looked into diet? Dairyt, soya and egg were the cause of my ds.

Nixz · 22/12/2008 11:04

Hi
Ive done every cream there is, we are under a consultant, antihistimines dont work, we have had them before, we are still using them as there isnt an alternative.
We have special jim jams, bedding, pillows etc

I appreciate everyones comments, what I need is something (preferably natural based) that will promote her relaxation and help her stay in a peacful sleep rather that a drug filled one that wont work and makes her feel worse the next day. This has been an ongoing problem for nearly 8 yrs and im desperately seeking some advise or ideas from others in similar circumstances that have found some help!
Thanks

ANyone?
Im not asking for my own needs!!! I have earplugs!!!
Im desperately worried, lack of sleep can cause some awful side effects and my dd has had nearly 8 years without a peacful nights sleep.
Whenever i mention it to my G.P, they make me feel like I want to drug my dd so i can party all night or they give me that patronising look that says '...er hello, kids dont sleep!' and give me more bloody piriton!

My uncle has severe eczema and he smothers himself in the emmolient at night and then clingfilms himself up. Realise this won't help her face but my uncle did say it helped soothe him in the night. HTH

Nixz · 22/12/2008 11:31

Every single cream we have used irritates her though. The wet wrapping was just sooooo awful for her.
I realise I sound ungreatful but we really HAVE tried everything!
Its a learnt behaviour now I think, therefore she needs something to break the cycle.

I don't know much about this really but if you think it is learnt behaviour rather than specifically the eczema what about contacting a sleep clnic and asking if there is anything they can suggest/try?
good luck

Nixz · 22/12/2008 11:41

Well, gp has just called, she doesnt know what to do next.
I have to wait for my next appt at alder hey which is the end of jan.
The one thing ive learned about eczema and its related conditions is that 'your on your own', no one has a clue!
So, we plod on.

Have you tried homeopathy? We use it for our children and it works a treat. Our homeopath's son had terrible eczema and the natural remedies have calmed it right down. The problem with the steroid creams is that they thin the skin.
I understand what you're saying about it being a learned response, but maybe if the homepathic route helps ease the eczema then scratching won't give the same feeling of release - i.e. if you scratch healed skin it's nowhere near as satisfying as scratching a rash/itch.
If you want I can find you a homeopath contact through mine? We're in the south east. I can also ask what cream she uses - it's a natural one she buys online.
Poor love, she must be exhausted.

Nixz · 22/12/2008 12:13

Thankyou scarlotti
How did you find your homeopath?
I really want to try and speak to one asap but obviously, a good one isnt always so easy to find!

A friend of mine has become one, she's just qualified. She's the one that treats my children but won't treat me as is a friend, so I had a colleague of hers for a while. To be honest, my friend is better - froma results perspective, although children respond much better.
I can ask her if you like? Alternatively, find a college that does the degree course - my friend has just completed a 4 year part time course to qualify - am sure the college can put you in touch.
What area of the UK are you?
Feel free to pm me or email me if we can do that on mn - happy to help!

Nixz · 22/12/2008 12:38

Thanks, im on the north west, Ormskirk, wigan, liverpool etc

What treatment do your chn have?

OP posts:
scarlotti · 22/12/2008 12:49

Mine are being treated for other things, not eczema. Treatments are different for different people, it's the person as a whole that gets treated, not just the illness.
Try google homeopaths in your area, or maybe look for a national homeopathic accredited site that might give you an idea. I'll email my friend and ask her for advice for you.

Nixz · 22/12/2008 13:07

Thankyou sooo much.
I have just emailed a lady called Rochelle Marsden who is in my area.

OP posts:
scarlotti · 22/12/2008 13:11

Excellent, fingers crossed she can help .
I've emailed my friend too so will let you know if she comes back with any suggestions.

scarlotti · 22/12/2008 13:44

Here's what my friend suggested - in case you still need it:

she can search using one of the two professional bodies' websites. She just needs to put her postcode in:

Try either:

www.a-r-h.org/FindMembers/find.php

Or:

www.homeopathy-soh.org/

Nixz · 22/12/2008 15:03

Thankyou so much - I appreciate your help
