Ds has just bumped head and now has a lovely lump...should I worry?

Ds has bumped head on door frame which made such a clonk and now has faint bruise and bump in the middle of his forehead.

Cried and was distressed for about 5 mins, but then has been playing happily for the past hour or so, and is now eating his tea.

Now, I worry over bumps, and know that they can appear fine, but then children can go downhill. So really I just want some reassurance from someone (Who knows what they are talking about!) so I can enjoy my evening and stop worrying!

Or do I need to worry???????????

How old is ds?

And how big is the bump?

PanicPants · 21/12/2008 17:11

He is 3.3 and the bump is about the size of marble.

Ok, tbh if he's acting and eating normally then I would just keep an eye on him until his bedtime and before you go to bed (which I'm dure you do anyway!)

If he starts acting differently then maybe call NHS direct for advice.

Good luck, I'm sure he'll be fine though.

Years ago my db (then about 7) whacked his head on a brick wall and had a bump the size of a small egg on his forehead. He felt ok at first but then felt faint, sick and had a headache - and the school did nothing!

Ok thank you...never sure how much to worry wth head injuries.

Oh, I know this one as it happened to us last week! DD bumped her head walking into a lamppost (is it wrong to LOL? ) and I phoned NHS Direct about it. They said to check that the bump isn't soft and squashy - if it is then that's not good, but if the bump is hard then it's ok. Ask your DS to recall something that happened before he bumped his head and something that happened after. Check no fluid or blood coming from ears, no distorted vision, no dizziness, no swelling behind the ears, walking & talking normally. I think that was all the NHS Direct nurse asked. She did however - and this is the worst part - ask that I rouse DD every 2 hours throughout the night to make sure she was ok. didn't have to actually wake her, just rouse her - but if she couldn't be roused then I needed to wake her fully. She had to stay calm & quiet (pah!) for 48 hours and no strenuous physical activity.
