ds1 been puking since 4 pm Thursday afternoon, didn't eat on friday apart from tea time and he puked on his dinner. Today he ate his breakfast, some of his lunch slept for two hours and ate his tea. we thought he was getting better then tonight he's puked 5 times the second time filling the whole bowl then he pooed, the runs all up his back alot! He's very pale and upset. Is this just a bug or is this the dreaded norovirus?

We all had norovirus several years ago. All I can say is thank goodness DS only was really sick once, because he was a baby. DH and I had it for about 36 hours each, and we just kept throwing up and pooing the whole time, even when there was nothing left in our stomach, lots managed to come out. And it came out all the time. I cannot tell you how violently ill we were each time we threw up or pooed. I think the thing about norovirus is that most people don't have it for more than 2 days.

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 21/12/2008 01:20

Norovirus is a bug - no better, no worse. Institute full handwashing protocols at every opportunity, don't let him go into childcare etc till clear for 48 hours and be very conservative about what you give him to eat.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 21/12/2008 01:21

That's the thing that is strange about when ds was sivk tonight he puked so mucb more than he'd eaten iyswim then pooed so much as well. Oh god the rest of us are going to have it for Christmas aren't we? [SAD]

Well it is very contagious - but on the other hand I have personally never caught a stomach bug from my children. (Tempting fate there aren't I) Just wash your hands, maintain good hygiene and hope for the best! How old is ds1?

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 21/12/2008 01:24

Northern he isn't n childcare so all ok there. I'm pissed off though because I know the reason he got this is from other careless people. his Playgroup party was last Tuesday and a friend's ds wa puking/pooing but she still brought hima nother woman's son was sent home reception sick and she brought him to the bloody todler group party!

We went through it pretty quickly. DS was sick first, and I followed a few hours later. I was so bad, I couldn't take care of DS. DH got it just as I was recovering, and it has been the one and only time he's ever taken off work. FIL got it, because he was around right before DS got sick. It went through our family in less than 3 days.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 21/12/2008 10:44

Ty I'm feeling very dodgy this morning I keep getting waves of sickness and am very pale. Ds has eaten his breakfast and hasn't puked yet. I just hope dp, dd and ds2 (11 months) avoid it!

My little girl has only just got better today. She has been sleeping almost constantly since Thursday and was being sick even on little sips of water.
First thing she wanted was marmite sandwiches.
Just make sure you wash your hands everytime you touch your ill DC, use disinfecting wipes on anything they could have touched and make sure the toilet and all taps are VERY clean.
And another important thing that i learnt from somewhere is NEVER rub your eyes with your hand. Always use a clean tissue or if you have to the inside of your top.
One of the easiest ways for germs to get in your body is through the edge of your eyelids.
Only problem with all this handwashing as that it wrecks your skin so make sure you moisturise or even just use gloves.

IllegallyBrunette · 21/12/2008 10:55

I had it last year and non of my kids caught it off me, or my mum, who was sat next to me whilst I vomitted into a bucket and sobbed that I couldn't do it anymore

About 24 hours after I stopped vomitting, my brother and his gf visted and she then went down with it 24 hours later.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 21/12/2008 10:56

Thanks Ripebery I'm glad your dd is feeling better today.

That's strange Illegallybrunette. I always think it's weird the way ds2 sometimes gets bugs etc before the other too when he's only a baby and doesn't really go anywhere to catch them unlike the other two.

Is it not a problem that they sleep all the time then? My ds is 6 months and I think has this He has had 3 yucky nappies this morning as well as being sick over everything and has been asleep in his cot for the last 2 hours. Should I just leave him? I can't give calpol as he can't seem to keep anything down but he is stripped off to try and keep his temp down.

littletownofmeglethem · 21/12/2008 11:00

rice cakes and plain bread are the most sensible things for them to eat when they start to feel better. I hope your DS is recovered in time for Xmas.

IllegallyBrunette · 21/12/2008 11:03

Sleep is the best thing for them honestly. I slept fitfully on and off for 48 hours, only waking to be sick or the other.
The vomitting takes so much energy out of you.

KnickKnackNaNollaig · 21/12/2008 11:10

We had it last weekend. We had to suffer through the whole hot/shivering high temp thing as none of us could keep down paracetamol.
We all starved for 24hrs and were fine the next day. Anyone in the rest of my family who starved were also fine 24hr later, anyone who gave in to hunger and ate toast was sick for a few days.
Dont drink large amounts of water in one go either, just lots and lots of sips throughout the day.

KnickKnackNaNollaig · 21/12/2008 11:12

agree with plenty of sleep too!

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 22/12/2008 10:02

aww we all had it in jan this year and was horrid.Luckily went through everyone fairly quickly and within a week was gone. Horrible draining week and the trio learnt very quickly how to use a sick bowl while sitting on a potty hope you are all better soon

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 22/12/2008 10:14

Thanks Nemo. E has avoided it so far so what's the bet she'll be up all night puking on Christmas Eve!
