Just had a pretty nightmareish appointment with all 3 dc.

Am I the only one who always comes oiut feeling like they have been labelled the worst mum in the world even though my dc brush their teeth twice a day without fail ??

Anyway, both dd2 (9) and Ds (6) have been reffered to an orthadontist. Dd2 I weas expecting as she has a huge overbite and overcrowding and a refferal was what we wanted.
Ds though was a complete surprise. Basically when he closes his mouth, the bottom of his two top front teeth are seriously close to digging into his lower gum. The dentist said that she wanted to reffer him to see what they thought and wether they'd want to use something to stop his mouth closing as much as it does

What sort of thing does she mean ?? He is only 6

Oh and Dd1 and Dd2 both had to have a back tooth sealed. Is that really bad ??

Firstly you aren't a bad mum, needing braces is to do with dental development not oral hygiene.

Sounds as though she is suggesting a type of brace which will temporarily prevent ds from closing his teeth together to allow the back teeth to erupt further thus making his bite less deep iyswim. She is looking at it now because at 6 you have dental and jaw development on your side to make it quicker/more effective.

IllegallyBrunette · 18/12/2008 17:59

Thanks that makes sense.

It wasn't the braces that made me feel bad, it was her insinuating that they don't clean their teeth enough which they do.
She told dd2 that she would refer her, but that if when she got there they said she didn't clean her teeth well enough then they'd not treat her. Dd was really upset.

She also asked ds how many times he clean his teeth. He didn't understand the question and so dd1 answered 'twice a day' and ds pipes up 'no i don't' . So I said, 'he brushes them once and i brush them once for him'.
Dentist then says to him 'thank you for being honest about it'

I basically just felt like she was saying I didn't care and wasn't doing a good enough job, which I am sure is an ott reaction but anyway.

Are electric toothbrushes a good idea for dd1&2 do you think ?? They just have normal ones at the mo.

I always feel like that after the dentist, IB

ds had to have ROOT CANAL aged 3 this August

and I honestly brush his teeth twice a day (dentist has made me switch from kids' toothpaste to adult though, as he says fluoride isn't high enough in kids' one)

IllegallyBrunette · 18/12/2008 18:03

Thanks dinny, i thought perhaps I was just being over emotional.

I was quite upset when she said ds needed refering as I wasn't expecting it.

We already use adult toothpaste, but have told dd1&2 that they can start using my mouthwash too.

I thnk dentists just get frustrated when they see teeth not being cleaned thoroughly and always sound like they're telling you off

I had NO IDEA about the adult toothpaste thing - hoping ds's next check-up is better

my dentist said not to get electric toothbrush - but to make sure I clean and then let them clean afterwards

try not to feel bad!!

lal123 · 18/12/2008 18:05

Oh - and getting back teeth sealed is a preventative measure - means that they are healthy at the minute with no signs of disease - so well done!

dinny · 18/12/2008 18:07

I had to move my children from our local dentist as he wanted to "watch" ds's what-was-a-small cavity

it caused ds a lot of pain and went HUGE, so I took him to my dentist

I'd rather the mnore harsh one if he's going to prevent ds's teeth falling out! he also did fluoride treatments, something the orig one never suggested

he's a fabbo dentist on the whole, albeit a bit scary!

IllegallyBrunette · 18/12/2008 18:07

Am feeling slightly calmer now I have had a whinge so thanks

Will just have to supervise their brushing alot more I think.

Thank you Lal, thats nice to hear.

I agree that i'd rather have a dentist who tells you whats what and gets treatment done so she is good in that respect.

Tbh I think her accent may have been making her sound harsher than she was.

Thankfully my teeth were fine, just had a little scrape of the bottom ones and that was it.

God, you're lucky your dentist does that - I have this afternoon been relieved if £50 from hygenist to do much the same!

IllegallyBrunette · 18/12/2008 18:22

Blimey dinny

I don't have to pay anything at the mo as am a single parent but as I will be working from Jan, I am not sure if I will have to pay in the future.

The last place I was at did charge me £15 to clean dd1's teeth even though they took me on as an nhs patient.

dc get fissure sealants as part of Denplan preventative care. ds has a small mouth and we simply can't reach the back ones well. It is to stop a build up leading to decay. ds also ahs (my) crooked upper side teeth whcih mayw ell ened sorting otu in time but they dentist recommends waiting for thmreo to come out first.

LIZS · 18/12/2008 18:38

yes you did !!!

dinny · 18/12/2008 18:42

tee hee, sorry, am going mad

she is desperate to be a ballerina now

IllegallyBrunette · 18/12/2008 18:52

Thanks Liz

Congrats to your Dd Dinny. I wish Dd1 still did her ballet

I just remembered that I have an old friend who is a dental tech so I just sent her a message on FB and she has replied saying ds will probably have a removable brace made with a bite plane on it to stop his mouth closing as much as it does now, giving his teeth chance to grow out and away from his bottom gums.

Doesn't sound as bad as I was first imagining it to be.

Well that was hilarious. Just got dd2 to have a go with mouthwash and as soon as she shut her mouth she spat it staight out in a fast jet all over me.

Second attempt was the same although she missed me and hit the floor with it.

I think we will be practising with water for a bit lol.
