She is 16 weeks and getting over bronchiolitis and has alot of phlegm, coughing, gets a green/yellow gunge in her eyes after sleep and seems very hoarse.

I had only been given her 2.5ml of calpol at night before bed so she has a peaceful nights sleep now i feel terrible as i shouldhave been giving more! It says on the bottle that age 3-12months to give 2.5-5.0ml so i gave her 2.5 at 6:30pm and then a 5.0ml at 10:30pm. Tomorrow would i be ok giving her 4x5ml every 4 hours?

I have had her in the living room with a wet towel on the radiator and 2 bowls of steaming water to try and help with the phlegm but it hasnt really helped. If i have her lying down and she starts coughing i can see it all at the back of her throat and there is LOADS! but she swallows it back down again

Is there anyway that i can a) stop the gunky eyes b)help her cough (which i think is causing a sore throat and her being hoarse and c) clear the phlegm up?

She is my 4th but i feel completely clueless and helpless when shes crying

Thankyou in advance for any information given

oh poor little soul it's so horrible when they're so ill especially when they're so tiny.
You're doing good things with the wet towels on the radiators, you could also try running a hot shower then going into the bathroom and closing the doors and just standing in the steam. If steam is going to help, that's when you'll find out.

Gunky eyes - are you bfeeding? Sounds weird but a little breastmilk drop in the outside corner of the eye apparently is very good - maybe because of all the antibodies?? No idea, but it also works if you tip her head back slightly and put a few drops up her nostrils to try and clear them a bit. She might sneeze and it might splash back out, but it does work!

Have you got sme Karvol? Try a bowl of boiling water in the room nearby with a few drops on top. It quickly fills the room with menthol, but obv. check dosage.

Tixylix decongestant? Not sure if she's old enough, but I think you can give from 3 months? I don't have a bottle handy to check, but someone might know. This works well for ds, helps to dry up all the gunk.

I used to keep ds in the sling when bunged, so that he was tipped slightly more upright than horizontal most of the time.Helps for obvious reasons. Have still spent my fair share of nights sleeping sitting up in his bedroom with him asleep across my lap to keep him unbunged!

Good luck, hope she feels better soon x

The gunky eyes are normal for kids - just her body getting rid of the bug the same as a runny nose. Sponge out with previously boiled water on cotton wool if it gets dried on.

Have you raised the legs of her cot to help with the cough? Phone books usually raise it enough.

And try Snufflebabe or similar vapour-rub stuff, both on her chest and on the soles of her feet (directly on the skin). Tis a reflexology thing, apparently (saw it on MN and it works ).

As for giving paracetemol, it will reduce a fever and control any pain but won't necessarily reduce cold symptoms. Follow the dosage instructions and trust your instincts.

It's horrible when you can't just magic it away for them, isn't it? To say nothing of how tired you get.

Got to go, DS awake - we're all bunged up and snotty in this house too.

As far as i am aware you cannot use any form of cough syrup for children under 2 now?
