Horrible nappies.

DC3 (17months) has rarely had a solid nappy, would probably say a dozen times in his life. They are always sloppy and smelly with bits in them.

The whole family is on a gluten free diet because DC2 is gluten intolerant so we all eat GF as it is easier. So I know it is not that.

Saw dietician and upon her suggestion we have gone lactose free but no real improvement.

Dietician has referred us to Paedeatric bod and we are waiting for an appointment at the moment.

Can anyone suggest anything else it might be and things we can try while I am waiting for this appointment.

He has on average 3 pooey nappies a day and BF 3 to 4 times a day, sometimes more, sometimes less. He has been on solids since 6 months.

Thinking of things friends' DCs have had/done...

One had a giardia infection that the doctors repeatedly failed to diagnose. Surely that would have been picked up at some point in the last 18 months, though?

Another had nappies like that until his mother gave him infant formulation prebiotics/live bacteria, IIRC. She said things improved after that. But her DC was younger at the time.

Hmmmm! prebiotics, like Yakult type thing?

Will go and have a google and research. Thanks P&S.

IIRC there are special infant ones with a different range of stuff? Or something like that... this is all based on memories of a brief discussion around three years ago, so I am vague...

There are two fairly scary things that can cause probs with digestion but if your DS is otherwise healthy it's highly unlikely to be them- coeliac disease or cystic fibrosis - both of which cause probs with digestion and absorption of foods usually resulting in poor weight gain and malnutrition. Both are fairly easy to test for if a paed suspects anything.

Meanwhile I'd second trying prebiotics- we use them for both DCs (my youngest has cystic fibrosis) and have been since they were 3 months old! We get Biocare Acidophilus Plus strawberry flavour- see: www.yourhealthfoodstore.co.uk/details.php/p1687_biocare_acidophilus_plus_banana_or_strawberry.html Both our DCs love it, and I certainly think it helps digestion enormously (plus meant to benefit the immune system)

Hope you get some answers and improvement soon xx

Thank you JJ for that information. After doing a bit of a google that prebiotics are going to be my next line of attack I think.

Definatly not coeliacs as we have a GF free diet because of DC2.

Meant to say how long does a bottle last for?

I give DCs half a teaspoon on their food twice a day (as recommended by a medical herbalist) so a bottle last 2-3 months for both DCs

Good luck hope the probiotics do the trick

That's not bad at all. Doesn't work out as expensive as it looks.
