DD2 was admitted to hospital on sunday night/early hours of monday morning. She was diagnosed with bronchilitos (sp?) she was working very hard to breath so was put on oxygen to help her, she was then discharged at around 12 noon yesterday. She slept alot yesterday and had quite a peaceful nights sleep.

She didnt really have trouble breathing throughout the night and there was no snorting.

This morning she woke but was very drowsy still and kept rubbing her face on my shoulder, then she only took 3oz of her bottle. She also had alot of mucus/discharge in and around her eyes. Breathing is still fine. She has slept most of the day waking around 3 times for a bottle which she took 5oz each time so no real problems there. She hasnt been overly happy today but has managed some smiles. Got loads just while she was in the bath. While i was getting her dressed (which she hates) she started to cry but it sounded very strained and quiet like she was struggling.

Basically what i want to know is, is this part of the illness, is it possible for a 16 week old baby to lose their voice and have a sore throat? I'm worrying that the illness is getting worse although there is hardly anything wrong with her breathing. She also has a bit of a chesty cough but when i tried to get some cough syrup i was told they dont make any for babies so have been giving her calpol.

I'm a very paranoid person PLEASE someone put my mindat rest!!

Thanks for reading and sorry its so long!!

isn't broncheolitis bacterial? Sounds like she still has it.

iliketosleep · 16/12/2008 19:26

it can either be bacterial or viral, she has viral. She does still have it im just worried its getting worse and not better or wether the symptoms are normal

IIRC, the hoarse voice and cough can go on for ages after the actual infection has gone, with bronchiolitis.....dd2 had it at 4 weeks, and was hospitalized for a week (she has laryngomalacia, so extra complicated and was very ill) and all the babies in with it had that hoarse cry and cough.

If she's feeding, and smiling, and breathing ok, I wouldn't worry...if thats possible...but if you get too anxious, call NHS Direct: they were very nice to me when dd2 had it, and never minded me checking things out.

Hope she's better soon

Also, viral peaks at day 2-3, so she's unlikely to get worse - other than secondary infection type things - after that. If she has no temp, and is breathing ok, she's not likely to have a secondary chest infection. HTH.

Agree that if she's more or less OK in herself, there's not too much to worry about, especially if she doesn't have a temperature, which is the thing to look out for. You can do some steam in the bedroom treatment to help her breathing if it gets bad in the night and prop the cot up at the head end so she's not lying flat. Coughs often go on for weeks.

i agree with elibean phone nhs direct if worried. just try and remember what you want to do when you are poorly. sleep and do nothing for a few days!!! remember bronchiolitis all to well.ds2 spent time in hospital but also had added heart problems.good luck

Just echoing what the others have said. My DS has had bronchiolitis twice and both times he has gone on to develop pneumonia. We were told to watch out for him developing a temperature but if he didn't it was just the bronchilitis virus which can linger for a long time - weeks I believe. Our doctor was happy to keep checking DS out because he wasn't improving, so no reason not to check. We got a humidifier from argos for £25 which seems to really help him. He did lose his voice completely at one point!
