Cronically blocked Nose = Very unhappy baby

Hello, this is my very first post...! My little angel is 10 weeks old and has had a blocked nose since 2 weeks. We have been through four bottles of saline but things appear to be getting worse. I think the saline is drying her passages out. We have a humidifier which hasn't helped, we have rasied her cot at one end, again, no joy. She can't sleep lying down because of her nose and has started to have trouble feeding. She is breast fed. Any advice would be gratefully recieved because we need some sleep!! Her poor big brother is having to endure two very grumpy, very tired parents! Thanks in advance.

Squirt some breast milk up there. It will work just as well it's just harder to get up there than the drops!

Hope you get some more sleep soon!

If you can, take a deep breath, open your mouth and put it over baby's nostrils and suck gently. DD2 couldn't feed a couple of weeks ago (14 weeks) so i just went for it as i couldn't bear seeing her in distress and keep pulling off the breast gasping for breath

Oh, and congrats on your new baby and the breastfeeding

my 4 month old has same prob again too. Tho she slept better than normal...we didn't! Best thing we do is put Snuffle babe (like baby Vicks) on clothes, bedclothes etc. Also put it on boob near her nose when feeding. We also take her in the room when we have a hot shower as the steam helps.
Hope you have a happier baby soon

Hi, welcome and congratulations.

Has your baby had a blocked nose since 2 weeks old or for the last two weeks?

My eldest had a very stuffy nose as a small baby that turned out to be an early symptom of a dairy allergy.

If this does turn out to be the problem with your baby, the fact that you are breast feeding really helps. All you have to do is cut all dairy out of your diet (the protein in cow's milk that can upset some children passes into breast milk).

Could be worth a try if this persists.

Good luck and keep posting, you will get loads of good advice here.

BTW we did all the saline, cot raising, vicks stuff too and none of it helped.

Thanks everyone. It's so heartwarming to get such good friendly advice so quickly!! Beachcomber, she has been blocked since she was 2 weeks old, but it is only the last week or so that it has really bothered her. I have tried the breast milk in her nose and she just got very confused! I will cut out dairy as I am not supposed to eat it anyway ! Thinking about it, she had some emergency formula on Saturday because she couldn't get comfortable enough to breast feed when we were out. She absolutely hated it, spat most of it out then had sickness and a horrid bottom all evening and the next day. So, no more cheesey pasta for me. My bottom could do with the extra fat anyway!
