How often is your toddler ill at this time of year?

My DD is nearly 2 and attends nursery 3 days a week. So far this winter has been worse than the last and we are all ill pretty much all the time. We get a week off before the next bug comes along. DD has got a permanent snotty nose and has had a cough for nearly a month now.

I am pregnant so tend to pick up whatever DD has got as immune system a bit low.

Am not sure whether its because she goes to nursery or whether it would be just as bad if we were at toddler groups etc.

DD is 2, also at nursery and also just goes almost from one cold to the next. I think it is normal - their immunes systems developing - but, yes, it is a total pain.

Laugs · 15/12/2008 20:01

*immune I mean

My DS was 2 a couple of weeks ago and does 3 days at nursery. We are just the same as you - today one third of the kids and staff at nursery were off sick. Think it's the time of year - my neighbour's grandson is 3 and has missed the entire last 3 weeks at his nursery due to one cold after another. I was wondering whether to get worried (ok - I WAS worried), but decided last week that lots of us are going through the same thing at moment.

mincepiemadness · 15/12/2008 21:16

Yes, completely normal. I found as DD gets older the bugs become less frequent and duration shorter. It's a real pain though. Exposure to other children / bugs good in longer term, builds immmune system, lessens chances of childhood leukaemia for example.

tistheCEEBEEtobejolly · 15/12/2008 21:19

My DS1 is 2 and goes to nursery 4 days a week - he has had a permanent snotty nose for weeks and weeks (lost count tbh!)

The worst bit is that he sneezes all the time, leaving long strings of snot dangling - and he has now realised it is 'fun' to drip them onto the floor, books, his baby brother etc

jumpyjan · 17/12/2008 19:25

Thanks for your replies. Its good to know we are not the only ones going through this (though of course sorry if your LO's are poorly).

Everyone keeps telling me its normal but I just can't believe the frequency of the bugs at the moment.

Jumpy - my dd 2.3 has been ill all of december. Tonsilitis, ear infection, cold and now today conjuntivitis. I feel so sorry for her. I've just ordered a childrens multi-vit which I hope can help stave them off in future.

nickytinseltimes · 17/12/2008 19:31

I have temporarily withdrawn ds from playgroup for this reason - I am at the end of my tether getting no sleep and being ill. Ds takes it in his stride, but likes to share!

Tbh, it wouldn't be so bad if people would keep their kids off when they are clearly unwell. Fair enough, send them in with a cold, but not with a temperature or after vomiting. Drives me batty.

nickytinseltimes · 17/12/2008 19:32

I should say, if people would keep them off when they are ill, like the good peopl eon tis thread.

PillockOnTheChristmastree · 17/12/2008 19:33

An entire week off in between bugs? Sounds like bliss

Ds1 is never ill. Ds2 gets everything going and has spent the last 5 weeks ill.

I have Narcolepsy which makes it a complete blardy nightmare as Ds2 not sleeping I can't cope with, and if I were to get the bugs he has I'd sleep for days on end!

jumpyjan · 18/12/2008 20:41

Now I feel really sorry for all you Mums going through the same thing.

Did we all used to get ill as often as this when we were little?

My youngest ds is 2 and he doesn't go to nursery but we do toddler group at least once a week. He has had one thing after another this winter. Unless he has a temp or is very miserable or ofcourse being sick we have tried to just carry on as normal. Can't keep ourselves locked up for the whole winter. Hoping next winter he will have a better immunity.

thatsnotmymonster · 18/12/2008 20:52

DS 3.8, dd1 2.5 and dd2 7mths have all got chicken pox.

popperdoodles · 18/12/2008 20:54

at least they will get it all over and done with together.

mikeysmom · 19/12/2008 22:00

Mine 3.9 year old DS gets sick almost once a month, we just attend toddler groups.

I think it either that or the store. I try to remember to wash his hands coming in and out of any store, seems to be helping. Shopping buggies are really discusting!

fizzbuzz · 19/12/2008 22:08

my dd 2.5mo has been ill for 9 1/2 weeks out of the last 11

Coughs, colds, vomiting, random temperatures, stomach bugs, impetigo, water infection. We have had 1 week of normality

loveingigglypiggly · 19/12/2008 22:13

I was told from 12 months children can take econachia (spelling??). Might try it myself. My 12 month old has omly had 2 full weeks on 'wellness' since he was born! Anyone else have a little one with a nose that runs and runs?

MoominMymbleandMy · 20/12/2008 02:11

Mine is 13 months and has only had two days between bugs since September.

Tryharder · 20/12/2008 13:17

Loveingigglypiggly, my nearly 7mo DS2 was born with the snuffles, and has had 2 episodes of coughs/colds already. He's asleep now but coughing as i write so i fear it's all about to start again... then his older brother will get it, then I will get it....so no doubt we will all be feeling like shit on Xmas day

FFS! If I wasn't financially tied to this country, I'd emigrate somewhere warmer like a shot.

AND I am still bf DS2. I thought bf was supposed to make their little immune systems stronger!!

fizzbuzz · 20/12/2008 13:53

When do they stop catching everything going?

Piffle · 20/12/2008 14:01

always hell this time of year
Mine are aged 14,6 and 21mths.. All sick as dogs

Overmydeadbody · 20/12/2008 14:08

When DS was a toddler I resigned myself to the fact that he turned into a coughing spluttering snot monster for at least 6 months of the year.

strawberrycornetto · 20/12/2008 21:26

My DS is 10 months old and has been ill all except 2 days since mid October (having started nursery at the beginning of October), including two lots of pneumonia. This thread makes me feel better, I had started to think there was something really wrong with him but there seem to be lots of DCs in a similar position.

J2O · 20/12/2008 21:44

my 14 month old dd doesn't go to nursery andd is still always ill, colds and coughs, think its the time of year!
